Cute Russian comic. The home of the official English version is here if anyone wants to skip ahead (or support them): https://boosty.to/gabiconomics-en

Payment in kind (or, in this context, salary in kind) is a form of wage compensation where workers receive goods, services, or other property instead of money. This method has historically been used in agriculture, household service, and early industrial settings, where employers might provide food, housing, clothing, or other necessities as part of a worker’s compensation. In the broader sense, payment in kind also refers to other business repayments or compensations (interest, debt etc.) using things other than cash: goods, services, or even further securities like additional debt.

Payment in kind is yet another practice that makes sense from an efficiency standpoint, and should be a good option - The workplace gets cheaper goods in volume, and distributes themselves, that’s a time and labor saver.

But under Capitalism it’s just a halfway house that leave you inured, dependent, and much more exploitable until you’re a slave in a company town.
