I regret to inform you that the internet was alive and well in 1989. I can personally attest to downloading dirty pictures from newsgroups, even if the larger ones required multiple pieces and we had to clip the headers and concatenate the files. The online guitar archive for tablature was also available and 100% free.
I’m still sad that olga.net was taken offline. I’m also surprised that this was twenty years ago. For me one of the first signs that corporations were ruining the internet. (after Napster, but that was quickly replaced with other dubious software).
