This article only makes me more convinced that “AI” has just replaced the term “computer program” in general use.
it’s like how in the 10s everything suddenly became an “app”
I work in education. A lot students just use the word “AI” to mean anything a computer does thats the least bit automated
That’s kinda been the definition for AI in “gamer” talk for decades. Basically replacing the word “algorithm”
I point this out to students too, when they insist “AI” is new. Really socratically drilling in on defitions with them lol
It’s a specific type of a program that can make stochastic decisions. Ultimately AI is just a form of automation, and it’s very useful for many real world applications where a system has to make decisions based on messy data.

The article is actually praising china for being pragmatic with their approach to ai instead of this futuristic pie in the sky super intelligence pipe dream. (At least that’s how I read it)
