Genomic information also shows that the virus involved in the outbreak is similar to Andes viruses already known to circulate in South America and is not a new variant. There is currently no evidence that this variant spreads more easily or causes more severe disease than other Andes viruses.

Another good link with very detailed (very technical) info https://virological.org/t/preliminary-analysis-of-orthohantavirus-andesense-virus-sequences-from-a-cruise-ship-related-cluster-may-2026/1029

If this was a new variant that is exactly what they would tell us though, and it is spreading more than this Andes variant is supposed to.

Evidence from previous outbreaks, including the Epuyén cluster in Argentina, in which three patients accounted for 21 (64%) of 33 secondary infections, indicates that person-to-person transmission of Andes virus infection can occur through close contact.

And that was on land. There’s no precedent for a cruise ship, a hilariously infectious environment. Fuck cruise ships forever, I wish we could just ban them.

One person got it from sitting on an airplane seat two rows behind somebody that had it.

While I agree cruise ships are incubators of pathogens, and full of fat people, the last part being neither here nor there but I’m going to mention it anyway, I am starting to get a little worried about this.

Not a lot I don’t think it’s likely, but if Hanta became more infectious it could be a really big fucking deal. What if some assholes were doing gain of function testing and it got loose?
