Fundamentalists are only the spear tip; you mistake them for just a tiny minority without knowing their purpose, they are the elite spiritual warriors of very powerful organizations that have been around much longer than any other private orgs on Earth, and they will die for their cause without a second thought. They’ve been doing this for generations, and have it down to a fine art.
