I understand not wanting to play the tip culture game, but why not avoid the restaurants that require their employees to rely on tipping? By still going to these places and not tipping service staff, the non-tipping patrons are just being assholes to the staff. In one way or another, a server is going to literally lose money on each of those customers due to tip outs they are required to pay their coworkers. The owners still get the money they wanted and won’t care at all about the anti-tipping stance.
I hate tipping as much as this next person, but refusing to tip a server as protest to tipping is naïve, selfish, and ineffective. It just makes someone (often) already struggling, struggle more and that’s just needless and fucked up.
Unfortunately unless it’s advertised it’s not easy to know. Typically counter service places don’t rely on tips for wages. And the newer POS systems throw it out there anyway even if it’s not considered appropriate, which definitely can make it more confusing
Yeah, having the tip request on the PoS screen is bullshit since all it does is make the customer uncomfortable and blur the lines between which establishments actually rely on them and which ones don’t.
Unfortunately for them I’ve just stopped tipping unless someone is explicitly waiting on me and cleaning up after me.

How do you know that beforehand? Last I went it was basically always an expectation even out of strictly the food game…
