The last time this made the rounds it was about the kind you install for solar on your roof. Typically the Chinese ones are cloud connected and either need that to function or need it to be convenient (meaning to get any information/statistics out of them).
What are the possible “cybersecurity” fears over power inverters, which IIRC are pretty purely “dumb” electric circuits?

Not true, many models don’t need that to work. Maybe Huawei does, but cheaper brands like Deye or EASun normally don’t require cloud connection.
