I haven’t been watching much in terms of actual shows for a good while, then while listening to a podcast a host casually mentioned they had rewatched Chernobyl, how it still holds up, that there’s a reason it got as much acclaim as it did, etc. So I thought I’d give it a go and wow, loved it (still one episode left to watch).
Had me thinking, what else have I missed out on? What are some “absolute cinema” TV shows that still hold up and and are considered must watch?
No spoilers. That show is brilliant in every way. the psychology behind why it looks like a sitcom when hes in the room, and not when she is, is a way to express narcissim. They throw an anniversary party and he leaves her in a room by herself, and has a party for himself in the backyard. He does some horrible stuff to her, a lot of it has been going on for long before we come into their lives, and previously we’ve all been trained to look past the things he does with canned laughs, gaslighting us, into believing hes the hero of the story, and stretching our beliefs (in other sitcoms) to excuse hugely selfish behaviour. This show flips everything on its head. She holds hope and takes all the horrible things he throws at her, because she has this dream she’s clinging to, that things will all get better. She’s essentially gaslighting herself. When she starts to get honest about how she’s feeling, and noticing the things hes doing to her, things start to get real. It was designed and written to be 2 seasons, which sounds short, but it packs a huge punch and ties up perfectly, which is sorely rare. It absolutely causes you to question everything. It’s Especially good a second time around, when you know what to look for.
