I was looking to get mid rangeish build complete before prices get too bad. a friend of mine has offered to sell an machine of his that he took the gpu and drives out of.

atx case with fans
no gpu
no storage
can i work with this build or would it just be better to start from scratch. willing to go for a more expensive build if it would save from upgrading during the worst of the memory shortage. most demanding games i’d play are from-software and kojima-studio releases. have a 1080p monitor so i won’t be playing at any resolution higher than that
Depends how much they are selling it for. 1080p doesn’t require much, so if you can get that really cheap, a GPU and store will get you over the line easily.

That is well worth it, case + PSU + mobo would push up to ~$300 by themselves if you had to buy new, so you’ll be well ahead. I’d take it, get a GPU and a SSD and you’ll be set.
