  • Please correct me if I’m wrong, but, IMHO, most of the problems I see being voiced by anti-AI (actually, anti-LLM) people, seem to have less (if anything) to do with the tech per se and more to do with capitalism’s and corporations’ usurpation of it.

I mean, if LLMs were something exclusively made and maintained by, say, a not-for-profit academia (as in a “Libre and Open Science” kind of academia where scientists are working for the entire Earth rather than working for profit/egoistic goals), like the Machine Learning field kind of already was back in the dawn of perceptrons, maybe, just maybe, we shouldn’t be experiencing this whole dystopia, no?

  • It’s excellent! Just two ideas I’d suggest:
    - Ability to search/list all indexed forums/communities belonging to specific instances/servers indexed by the catalog; for example, having a Instance picker alongside the “Platforms” dropdown. It’s not something that would fetch non-indexed instances, but rather something that would filter among the already-indexed ones.
    - Speaking of “Platforms” dropdown, either some kind of general toggle/switch and/or some kind of “filter by this specific platform” so, for example, in order to search for a specific platform (e.g. Lemmy), one doesn’t need to toggle off the switches for all the other platforms (currently the search form is default “all”; as more platforms and derivatives get eventually added, toggling 'em all off just to filter one platform will eventually become a problem)

Also, just to confirm, is lemmy.eco.br (and to a certain extent bolha.forum which only lists one community while they do have many) not in the list because of their usage of Cloudflare (and Anubis in case of bolha.forum)?

  • Oftentimes religious beliefs can change someone’s worldviews, including but not limited to, environmental awareness. And I bring my own anecdotal example: since I became a syncretic Luciferian then a sudden Lilithian, I became quite eco-centric, as I got to understand Homo sapiens as just one among countless species instead of some “god’s exclusive toy” on this Pale Blue Dot. I also started to personally understand LGBTQIA+ values because, thanks to Lilith, I began discovering a part of me I wasn’t aware of, my queer me I’ve since became quite fond of (e.g. polishing my nails and letting them grow as a cisman-presenting person).

Those things would be unlikely to happen if I stayed on christianity (yes, I was christian in the far past and I deeply hate having been one) due to christian brainwashing that makes christians to “fear disobeying god” (now I want “god” to go pound sand).

There are religions and religions, faiths and faiths. You won’t get a coven of Wiccans knocking at your door at Monday (Moon day) 3AM “do you have 5 minutes to hear about our Mother Hekate?”, you won’t hear Luciferians screaming “Agios Lucifer, He’s coming back to reign” inside a bus/subway while you’re commuting, you won’t see a Thelemite lawmaker trying to shove Liber AL Vel Legis inside kindergarten and schools, you won’t see Goetians bringing a Solomon’s Magick Circle inside a hospital room to call upon Stolas to cure the patients with his herbal knowledge… Yet atheists tend to put all religious beliefs into the same box as abrahamic religions which have persecuted both you atheists and us pagans, instead of trying to make some rational distinction between different faiths…

  • Snowy owl: not made of snow.
Every Fish Owl: not a fish.
    Every Eagle-Owl: not an eagle.
Every Hawk Owl: not a hawk.
Spotted owl: often can’t be spotted (especially if she’s inside tree hollows, good luck trying to spot her).
    Elf owl: not an elf.
Fearful owl: not always fearful (especially when she’s hunting her prey)
Laughing owl: unfortunately hasn’t been laughing since the early 1900s (she’s extinct 😢)
Golden masked owl: wears no golden mask.
(Also, any masked owl: wears no masks)
Eastern Grass owl: not made of grass.
Bubo virginianus: can be found dwelling thousands of kilometers away from the USian state, for example, in Brazilian Southeast.
Megascops sanctacatarinæ: can be found in Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Paraná, hence not just Santa Catarina.
Burrowing owls: generally uses burrows made by other animals (e.g. prairie dogs), so she isn’t necessarily burrowing her burrow.
Athene noctua lilith (on her way to become a taxonomic species of her own, Athene lilith): unlikely to be the specific species related to the Mesopotamic Goddess (in fact, Otus and Bubo (esp. Bubo ascalaphus and Bubo cinerascens due to their geographical habitats) would be far more stronger candidates for the flanking owls depicted in the Burney Relief)

…and so on so forth. Lol

  • It’s been a long while since I had a Lemmy account, but Lemmy definitely has PFPs, I remember having one defined back then. Since I don’t have a Lemmy to check the exact settings path, I looked up the lemmy-ui source code (since I used to be a Web developer and I somehow manage to try and visualize an UI solely from its source-code), and the option to upload a new PFP is somewhere within the “user settings” session of the settings, although I see there’s the possibility for a Lemmy instance to disable either PFPs or images in general (which will consequently disable PFPs), in which case the avatar uploader will be grayed out. (Not the case for your instance, though, as I found reddthat accounts with a PFP upon searching for your instance).

  • What when dark humor is self-deprecating instead of deprecating others? For example, this drawing I made, in which there’s humor from mixing esoterica/occult (alchemical transmutation/metamorphosis) with ornithological behaviors (owls eat rodents) being read by my self-avatar (i.e. a projection of my self) in self-loathe (imagining oneself as a rat/mouse to become dinner for owls). Perhaps one would call this “grim humor” because it’s a subtle Memento Mori, but it seems more of a dark humor piece, a piece I had some legit laugh back when I made. Drawing pieces like this is my attempt to stay sane while trapped into an insane existence.

A digital drawing in which a magician (a fair-skinned, short-bearded, young adult man wearing dark blue prescription glasses and a long, dark blue robe with a hood) is sitting with legs crossed before a glowing red pentagram (partially visible), happily and focusedly reading a book entitled "Ars Transmutatio - How to become a mouse" while he's being watched by an actual owl (a Megascops / Screech-owl, with small/compact body, grayish-beige plumage, pale green eyes, subtle but still prominent ear tufts, long and sharp claws) perched on a tree branch near his shoulder. The owl is looking either at the man and/or at the book he's reading, and is seemingly waiting for the man to complete the ritual, calm (with slightly lowered eyelids and folded wings) and even amused (mouth slightly opened as if hooting/screeching or licking her own lips out of expectatives that there'll be a lunch soon). The book cover shows a whimsical illustration of a tiny mouse before the figure/silhouette of a brown owl, both depicted in a cartoonish manner on the cover. Behind the man and the perched owl, there's dense folliage from a forest, with the man sat down on the grassy ground amidst the trees, in a clear patch. The grassy ground extends to liminality, blending seamlessly with the nocturnal sky which features a subtle crescent Moon, almost to the side of the perched owl.

  • Uhm… this is not how Hebrew Gematria works. The Hebrew numerals were inspired by Greek numeric system, in which letters have numeric values to be added together (you’re concatenating digits instead).

While vaw has the numeric value of 6, a “vaw vaw vaw” actually results in 18 (6+6+6). What you’d expect to be 666 would be any permutation of, say “taw resh samech vaw” (e.g. “resh samech vaw taw”, “resoth” “רסות”, which seemingly means nothing but makes more grammatical sense to have a final taw) because they’re respectively 400, 200, 60 and 6 (thus adding up to 666). Any sequence of Hebrew letters adding up to 666 would be actual Gematria…

…however, the New Testament, where the Book of Revelations pertains, wasn’t even written in Hebrew, it was written in Koine Greek. What gets translated as “666” or “six hundred and sixty-six” is a direct transliteration from three Greek letters (I don’t remember which are which, as I’m writing this reply mostly from my own memory) with the respective numeric values 600, 60 and 6 adding up to 666. Some argue the second Greek letter was originally written as the equivalent for 10 (and ended up unreadable due to how the papyrus suffered the effects of time), thus the so-called “number of the beast” would be 616.

Finally, virtually any moment in time could be pointed as “these are the times as prophesied in Revelations”. It has long been a silly moving goalpost. As far as I know, the ones trying to bring about an apocalypse on Earth are the ones who believe in the Book of Revelations so badly they’re literally tempting “god” despite the “do not tempt god” rule written somewhere in the same bible.

Source: I briefly went through a christian/evangelical religious phase back in the past due to relatives’ influences.

  • The conversation (context window) would surely become very big. Know what else is big? Bubo bubo, Eurasian Eagle-Owls, are majestically big owls whose wingspan can be, iirc, as wide as 2 meters, almost 80cm tall, yet they possess a very silent flight. Their western cousins, Bubo virginianus, can reach almost similarly wide wingspans, too. Those owls have absurdly long legs, generally concealed behind their voluminous and fluffy plumage, which makes me think the Goddess from the Burney Relief (a Mesopotamic terracotta plaque depicting a woman with wings and owl talons standing/perched with a W-shaped pose atop two lions while flanked by two large-sized owls; She’s said to be either Lilith and/or Ereshkigal), if we were to try and classify Her zoomorphic manifestation ornithologically, She would easily be an owl pertaining to the Bubo genus, possibly capable of lifting a whole human being if the plaque means to be depicting Her with slightly tucked wings (meaning Her actual wingspan would be as wide as seven meters given Her apparent tall height (more than 2.5 meters tall, as far as I visually calculated) compared to the lions).

  • it’s always about control

“Always about control”? Whom and how exactly am I trying to “control” through my practice of an extremely solitary, idiosyncratic practice, whose convoluted syncretism (borrowing concepts across Sumerian, Egyptian, Thelema, Wicca, Gnosticism, Luciferianism, Goetia, Quimbanda and many other religions) alienates me from practically all religions from which my syncretism derives because I don’t exclusively follow any of those?

    It’s all imaginary

Yes, I know!, and? So many things are imaginary around you right now, too. For example, as you’re reading this text, you’re seeing before you a mesh made of millions of trios of red, green and blue tiny dots shining in a very specific intensity so to interact your (respectively) L, M and S cones all over your retina, fooling your occipital lobe to interpret a large portion of the visible spectrum, then your Inferior temporal gyrus interprets symbols (letters from the English alphabet your graphics card is rendering a large raster bitmap based on this text’s UTF-8 byte-stream), as well as pictographs (Lemmy mascot from both the community’s avatar as well as from your lemmy.ca instance with the shape and colors of the Canadian flag; the maple leaf from the Canadian flag therein; all those colors and shapes from the Anubis “making sure you’re not a bot” anime girl shown every time you access the lemmy.ca instance to interact with the Fediverse) out of the bigger picture once projected onto your retina. The orange color you’re seeing outlining the Lemmy mascot icon from this community, it isn’t orange because there’s no orange dot on digital displays. You can neither touch nor interact with Anubis anime girl, she’s not even closely real. You can neither touch nor interact with the Maple leaf symbol like you could with an actual physical Maple leaf.

So, are you sure you’re gonna play the “deities are imaginary” atheist card with me, a religious, pagan person whose ground is heavily covered in nihilism (as in, nothing fucking exists, not even myself, as everything is a gigantic ocean of baryons and leptons from which the illusion of order, together with this Pale Blue Dot and all the self-rearranging carbon-based structures therein, have been emerged out of cosmic chaos)? At least I’m using the belief on my “imaginary” owl-goddess (because, yes, I can only imagine Her, as my retina never exactly saw Her) to seek and learn actual, scientific (ornithological) knowledge, instead of denying Science like Abrahamic religions often do.

    !asklemmy@lemmy.world

  • I don’t say this out of malice, but please, please, avoid using “religion” (and indirectly “belief in deities and other supernatural entities”) as a synonym for abrahamic religions because this ends up attacking countless religions and belief systems worldwide, some of which even lack a male capital-G God and/or are Goddess-centric.

The latter case is my case, I’m primarily a worshipper of Goddess Lilith, and I’ve been literally worshiping owls, especially because I believe owls are Her familiars, even Her zoomorphic manifestation (see Burney Relief) sometimes… not to mention how owls are majestic and amazing on their own, as beautifully cute yet fiercely powerful raptors possessing the most silent flight observable among avians… I mean, just look at any Bubo (my favorites, not necessarily in order of preference, are B. virginianus, B. ascalaphus, B. scandiacus, B. bubo, B. magellanicus and B. cinerascens), Megascops/Otus (M. kennicotti and O. bakkamoena) and Athene (especially A. noctua, A. lilith (yes, there’s literally an owl species named after Lilith, native to Middle East), A. brama and A. cunicularia) for long enough and you’ll hopefully understand how goddessome they are!

(And the fact that “I know my favorite Strigidae” by their taxonomic binomials may also tell ya something about how deep I got inside this rabbit burrowing owl’s hole of Science’s ornithology primarily motivated by non-scientific reasons (and also by my neurodivergence’s “hyperfixation” and “special interests” traits)).

There are also other religions and belief systems that are very animal-friendly (especially friendly to wildlife), including but not limited to Wicca, Druidism, Buddhism (“a monk must watch their steps lest they harm ants”) and (as far as I know) Hinduism/Shaktism (cows as sacred symbols of motherhood and abundance).

  • While most of the comments are correctly pointing out the late-stage capitalism as the main culprit, I must add something I didn’t see mentioned: COVID-19 pandemic.

To me, a Zennial, it was the main once-in-a-generation disgrace event. I still clearly remember the days when I began reading about a “mysterious pneumonia-like disease noticed among the patients from an ophthalmologist in Wuhan”, the first cases reported in South Korea, all the way to the outbreak in Italy, then World Health Organization finally declaring it a pandemic in March 11th 2020 (I can’t forget this specific date, either).

COVID-19 left so many marks. Emotional, as millions died from it; biological, as many who survived lived or are still living with the “Long COVID-19 syndrome”; and also societal, as it fundamentally shaped society as we know it.

I feel like I was never the same after I first got COVID-19. It’s as if my entire existence became split between “before 2020” and “after 2020”.

Maybe, just maybe, one of the explanations would be that SARS-CoV-2 is known to affect more than the respiratory system, it can also affect the brain. SARS-CoV-2 or not, the pandemic truly messed up with our brains as a society, I became sort of traumatized by it and so were countless other people, especially from my generation, because we spend a significant part of our adulthood with a world struggling to fight a virus. It was also the first time we experienced the concept of quarantine/lockdown (I was already an introvert person who’s accustomed with staying indoors, but the pandemic messed up with my graduation because I couldn’t elaborate my thesis, let alone present it, until I ended up giving up of a bachelor degree).

So, if I were to guess, the disgraces that followed up to nowadays, including the late-stage capitalism, seem to be heavily tied to that pandemic six years ago (which I remember as if it were yesterday).

  • The need for words is solved by usage, not by prescribing rules that prohibit importation.

Yes, I definitely agree. My earlier “the only problem is, it’s two words” was my strict attempt to stick to the OP’s definition “its own word” (with “word” as singular) while also being biased towards closed compound words instead of open or hyphenated compound words. I’m aware a morpheme isn’t the same thing as a word, and a word can contain multiple morphemes, it’s just that… well, at least to my eyes and ears, as someone who quite enjoys stitching words together, a closed compound word describing something feels better than having an open or hyphenated compound word. I’m quite fond of neologisms, especially when they’re a single, running sequence of letters (as pneumoultramicroscopicosilicovulcaniconiosis is a single sequence, albeit gigantic and breakable).

Therefore, by “problem” I didn’t mean “grammatically problematic”. Grammatically, it’s okay and, in fact, expected. I guess the word “problem” was way too much for what I actually meant.

Compound words in English can be spaced, hyphenated, and sometimes even parenthesized.

Yes, similar thing happens in Portuguese (my native language as a Brazilian): some examples include “quarta-feira” (Wednesday) and “trem de pouso” (landing gear).

German has the word “doppelkupplungsgetriebe” which means “dual clutch gearbox” but whether the first pair is hyphenated or not, these three words in English together refer to a single object, a type of automobile transmission.

The first part of the word instantly reminded me of the word “doppelganger” and, AFAIA, it has no hyphen.

Meanwhile, English has a genuine lack of a word for joy from the misfortune of others

While I was reading this part of your reply, the word “sadism” immediately popped up in my head as the closest English word to describe schadenfreude, except, in practice, yeah, both words are very different in meaning. (Also, sadism is literally coined after a proper name, Sade’s name)

“Saudade” (Portuguese for that feeling of missing someone, as in the feeling from “she misses her deceased grandma”) is also a word “missing” (pun intended) an English equivalent.

    emia meaning presence in blood

Not sure if this was intentional but I loved the reference (the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell). Lol

    importation.

Trivia: if we get deeper into etymology and history of evolution of human languages, we could argue modern languages are almost entirely comprised of imported words. The word “importation”, itself, is a meta example:

in (Latin for “in, at, on; into”) + portō (Latin for “to carry, bear; convey”) + ātiō (from -tiō, Latin suffix added to verbs to form action nouns denoting a process, action, or result of an action)
