I’m a very early Xer, and my kids are zoomers. We get along famously, making a point of meeting up for brunch or something weekly if possible. I help them, and they help me. We listen to each other, even if we just don’t agree on some things. We had a rough patch when they were teen/early adults, but love prevailed. It’s a question of love, respect and listening as much or more than talking. We all do volunteer stuff, are progressive, although they’ll call me boomer to mess with me during some arguments. It’s not all rainbows and unicorns, but the net result is positive. It really boils down to love, respect and being able to listen, and being able to agree to disagree. My sister and I keep tabs and help out our early boomer mother too, even though she can really get on our nerves, each in it’s own way, so it may be that we keep healthy family traditions.

It may help that we live in a mediterranean society, where family ties are valued and respected.

In Spain there are a lot of electrified tracks, and all high speed tracks are, but many tracks are electrified near urban areas, and not electrified in vast rural areas. Intercity trains are Diesel electric, running on electricity when they can, and switching to diesel for the rest. I’ve wondered why they don’t replace the diesel engines with batteries, to be charged while running on catenaries, to run the trains on the non electrified segments.

The vacuum cleaner I had, floor model, corded, would have been 10-12 years now. I fixed it and proptly sold it. I don’t think it would withstand another teardown without breaking something. I’m not saying the engineering concepts are bad, but they are designed with planned obsolescence, with fragility in mind.

Bagless vacuums have been around a lot longer too. Bagless vacuums are more convenient at first, but filters will eventually get impossible to clean completely. I have a Bosch 2 in 1 cordless, hand/broom, which I hate cleaning out. With my Kobold I simply replace a paper bag. Clean and fast, and the bags are quite cheap.

The things I’m referring to are not sacrificial parts, like the gears you mention, but parts and shells that don’t need sacrificial parts, quite the opposite.

All in all, there is absolutely no reason for those vacuums to cost 5x the price of equivalent competitors. Does a conical brush justify a 600€ price tag?
