The civil rights movements of the 1960s did not just have people marching in the streets or threats of fire being met with fire it also had legislators who had prior been opposing or ineffective that were able to work with newer more radical legislators. DSA and non-AIPAC candidates are those more radical ones and some (not all) of the dems are the opposing/ineffectives that can work with them.

Because we fund basically jack shit of scientific investigation that is just for the sake of investigation. A vast majority of funding is purpose driven which puts big blinders on the field. Failure of this type of idea could easily end the career of a new investigator or postdoc.

HTS made and then abolished a religious police force well before toppling Assad. Allowing education of women and worship of other faiths in a state that is over 90% Muslim is far less extreme than other Muslim countries in the region.

Past actions would have him as an extremist, terrorist, and war criminal, current actions show him as a relative moderate. That doesn’t mean forgiveness but when judging Syria via him you should maybe look more at the present than the past.

Ahmed Al-Sharaa since leaving Al Nusra and the HTS->current government by actions and words seem quite lenient. They allow and even promote women’s education, they don’t expect hijab/niqab wearing, they allow the Christian and Druze minorities to practice their religions, etc.

Looking at the statements and actions of HTS since ~2020 and toppling Assad (end of 2024) there is reason to be cautiously optimistic about what sort of Islamic state they are and can become. Ofc everything remains tenuous.

Thats the same logic when minorities are unfairly bothered by cops. A lot of people dont have the resources to fight the system especially for minor fines.
