Hi. After discovering the connected instances list on my instance, I saw a huge list of blocked ones, which(as I assume) is unique for each instance. So, I started to wonder: is there an instance that federates with as much others as possible and has the smallest black list? Maybe some kind of an observer instance on which you can access as much of Fediverse as it is possible? Thanks in advance.
Just to let you know. Most of the blocked instances you see for programming.dev (since your account is here) aren’t forums you would normally interact with but are various ones on the microblog side that cause issues (for hate speech, spam bots that have seo spam posted in various threads, cp, etc.). For forums running lemmy and piefed the amount is very low.

I get what you’re asking, but in practice, a considerable blocklist has to exist for pure security and practical reasons (like spam, phishing, cp and such).
Lemmy.today currently has an empty blocklist and the following instance policy in the sidebar:
We dont block any other active instances. We will keep it that way unless it becomes a moderation problem.

Lemmy.today is blocking no one, and I don’t think many instances block them.
Lemmy zip has some instances blocked by default on the user level, but you can unblock them on your settings. This was the reason I migrated here after lemm ee went down.
I like this as its my prefered style. blocking that can be reversed by the user. I get the idea they don’t want a bad default user experience. I also understand defederation for legal reasons.

I looked on my instance’s federation (fedia.io) just to see what it was, and while the defederated list wasn’t nearly as long compared to the federated, what struck me is how many there are. Lots of people out there with their own now. And from what it looked like, most of the defederated ones seem to be single user ones, so that tracks for how many spammers there used to be in the first year vs. now.
If you’re looking for the broadest view of the fediverse possible, I would warn that the instances that block the least are often the ones that are defederated from the most. There’s a tradeoff – as you have more and more lax moderation policies, more and more instances seem to decide they don’t want to interact with your instance. Also, if your goal is to see as much of the fediverse as possible, most of the posts you’re missing aren’t because your instance blocks them, but because lemmy doesn’t support showing them – you’re missing way more mastodon and pixelfed and loops and bookwyrm etc posts because your software doesn’t support them than you’re missing lemmy posts because your instance blocks theirs.
Are you suggesting that other software allows to show more of the Fediverse with Lemmy included?
I am. Interacting with a lemmy community from mastodon is a bit unwieldy, but you can do it. I bet you could even follow and post from pixelfed, though I haven’t tried. Mastodon was the first fediverse platform, so i think it’s generally the one that most platforms play best with, if you’re just looking for the widest view – Hubzilla users tell me it’s the best for seeing and participating in the largest chunk of the fediverse, but I’m yet to try it. More than anything, though, I’m telling you that if you want to see everything, you’ll have to be prepared to make more than one account – some stuff, like wanderer or funkwhale or owncast are pretty far afield from lemmy or mastodon, and you’ll be best served by using that service directly instead of trying to listen in from outside, and if you want to see into some of the more block-happy instances, you’ll have to sign up for an account on a “known good” (to them) instance.

I think sdf doesn’t block, and afaik no one blocks sdf.
I’ve never looked into how to do it, but I think you could host your own local instance and not block anything?
Recently it became a little bit to expensive to buy a separate computer for this purposes, so I would like to see some alternatives(if they exist) before spending money on a small server.

Sh.itjust.works defederates from communist instances, not just CSAM and the like, so that’s a move backward from OP’s current instance based on what they want.
