Windows has been increasingly failing at being what an operating system is supposed to be. It’s supposed to bridge the gap between hardware and software, and facilitate the launching and management of applications. Instead, it’s spying on users, collecting private date, silently installing and running software by third-party accessories, displaying ads, etc. It is full of friction when trying to use it, for example, it can’t suspend or shutdown correctly, it’s full of vulnerabilities, etc. …And then there’s Copilot…
Desktop Linux is talking off now, finally.
Yep building a new PC right now. Gonna swap my old one to Linux to let me learn with no fear and when I’m comfortable I’ll switch the new one too
Linux desktop is in a great position now. I’ve been using it long before it was usable for most casual users, but it’s finally reached the point where it has less problems than Windows for my purposes.
These days I ha e fewer problems with things like printers on Linux. That wasn’t the case when I first started
It’s what got me to switch, no more crash-to-desktop issues that some Windows 11 update caused

I bought a new computer recently. It advertised having Windows 11 pre-installed like it was a feature. Bitch, Windows 11 is about as welcome on my system as the McAfee virus is.

I have 10 at home, 11 at work.
11 is so slow. Right clicking anything has a noticeable delay. I won’t even bother listing the other problems. How do you make an os that is just sluggish and think “this is the next major release”
For my work PC I followed the advice of an article someone posted on here and turned off transparency and animations in the accessibility settings. It really makes a difference.
If they’d just kept the old Windows 10 taskbar/launcher the could’ve pushed it out as a forced update and very few people would’ve complained. Yes there’d be a few tech geeks freaking out, but the majority of users’ main complaint is GUI workflow. Leave that as-is and it’s an easy win.
The real trick would have been to make WIndows 11 better than Windows 10. Then people would actually voluntarily upgrade to the better system.
You’re not wrong, but this isn’t a problem of some obscure person wanting keyboard heating. Windows 11 is objectively worse than 10 was in nearly every way. It’s why people haven’t adopted it.
I honestly think that projects there are so large and disconnected already and now they are shoving AI to solve problems and firing people… It’s a mess … windows is at 77 percent or so useage today. I’m grabbing my popcorn and watching the youth with Bazzite and Steam anything . Think the writing is on the wall.
What sold my partner on Mint was the fact that my computer’s UI has basically remained unchanged for 20 years. She was pretty sick of Windows always screwing with workflows.
I gave Mint a shot and while its hardware support was the best (least Nvidia pain of any distro) the whole thing just felt so single-threaded. It was just too easy to lock up the UI. Maybe I was playing with bad plug-ins though, but they were official ones.
Then again, I managed to crash KDE Plasma by installing the vertical clock plugin.
I don’t think I use any plugins and I never have the UI lock up, contrary to Windows 11, where it happens all the time.
I don’t use anything special, but with 3 monitors I’ve noticed that I can freeze the GUI by opening too many things at once
Like if I open discord, YouTube, and spin up a hypervisor at the same time it’ll occasionally freeze the screen but audio is still going
Are you using NVIDIA or AMD? In the past I had problems with trying to get NVIDIA cards working with Linux and encountered problems like freezing too, but been fine with AMD.
The corporate culture at MS right now is beyond my comprehension … I mean they were always straight up predatory and anti competitive but this new face of it is purely evil.
Can’t believe Windows is XP’ing again
About a year ago, I installed CachyOS (it’s Arch based, BTW 😂) and found a KDE theme that looks just like Windows XP. It’s been a very solid experience!
Got so much XP we’ll be overleveled for the secret superboss fight.
So… If that 39℅ continue using win 10, theyll continue support? Ram and gpus are kinda expensive about now…
Only moved to 10 LTSC IoT about 18 months ago. Was on 7 well passed the support end date
