I debated posting this, but it’s a lazy, rainy Saturday and this is the hot topic, why not?

- What sanction did they impose? Community ban. Additionally, three of my communities were on the tesseract ban list.
I was the one of the first downvotes on the latest post here: https://lemmy.today/post/57202811 which probably instigated the ban.
Aaaand I was linking to the Admiral’s rant all over lemmy, which may have been part of it.
Now, this kinda sucks because I liked tesseract up until I couldn’t mod my own communities anymore, finding out later that they were on the ban list. Of course when a locked post comes up trying to make sense of the community blocks, calling them unstable and unmoderated, I’m gonna downvote that shit.
My username wasn’t even on the original ban list, just those communities.
There’s nothing toxic or unmoderated about anything I run. Not to mention that one of those communities has barely over 100 subscribers and exists just to post a few daily news articles from independent, Canadian sources.
I know nothing about the ban list makes any sense, but blocking three small news communities with posts that rarely get more than two comments and twenty upvotes is crazy. He would have had to search and dig and dig just to find them.
It’s extra nuts considering my brandnewsentence community gets wayyyy more feisty comments than the rest put together, and it’s not blocked.
So there’s your drama, it’s a poor consolation prize for the loss of a pretty good front end. I’m looking forward to the fork and any updates on the ban list.
This is a different person from the PieFed dev, right? If I had nickel for each time a dev of a popular fediverse software tried to sneak secret censorship into their software… well you get it. Admittedly this one seems way worse than the piefed one. That was reversed, right?
I just don’t get how anyone would think users would want or even be remotely ok with this.
Oh yeah PTB, obviously. Banning for downvoting a single post has got to be one of the worst reasons imaginable.
The piefed stuff has never been secret. If you set up a piefed instance, the options and toggles are right there in the admin settings, and can be turned off by the admins.
Opinionated fediverse devs writing apps that create the environment they want is a good thing when the bells and whistles they add in can easily be identrified, toggled and adjusted by end users and admins. This is what piefed does. Rimu coding the sort of thing he wants to use is better than Rimu coding nothing because he’s not creating something meaningful to him.
It’s very different to the tesseract situation, in which the blacklists were obfuscated, so that people wouldn’t even realise they were missing content, and didn’t know how to disable the blacklist even if they did realise it existed.
I do feel like piefed should disclose what settings are enabled on the server we’re using. Many of us came to the fediverse to get away from algorithms.
It does disclose it to the admins. I’m not sure how you would disclose it to general users? It’s not really a fediverse norm to expose admin settings to everyone. Though now that you say it, that might be a good thing to normalise?
Transparency of things that can affect a user’s experience is always a good thing to normalize to me. Maybe these admin setting values could be exposed with the API so apps and the server finder sites can show them?
I didn’t hear about the piefed thing getting reversed. Great, if so.
