They have defederated with the leftests (hexbear.net, Lemmy.ml [the Lemmy dev’s home instance], and lemmygrad.ml) over “extreme views” and the anarchists (Lemmy.dbze0.com) over piracy support (oh my mistake, they just blocked all piracy communities) long time ago. I’ll let someone else explain the flotilla.
As for good instances, it depends what kind of experience you want to have. Why isn’t there an instance test yet?

I think that’s the great thing about the fediverse - being able to decide (as instance, comm, or user) who you interact with, which was what the tesseract dev was taking away from people.

Hexbear was never federated with world, to paraphrase worlds words they were “preemptively defederated as a last resort”
World has never defederated from lemmy.ml, partially because they’re the dev’s home instance.
