The game is Juiced (2005)

I’m normally pretty good at getting old janky PC ports running but this ones stumped me after multiple attempts.

Tried running through Lutris, Bottles, Heroic and base system Wine. using many old and new versions of wine/proton.

DXVK, D3D, Different directx dependancies through winetricks and even tracking down an old Directx9c Windows installer and installing that in the prefix but even that didn’t help.

FIX here: I needed to install dxdiag through winetricks, which revealed a memory error that was fixed by downloading the 1.01 patch from here. I also switched to Wine-GE 8.26, using Proton the game would crash after the first loading screen.

I’m still working out how to get my controller fully working but that’s apparently an issue even on Windows sooo

Sorry, I know that this isn’t a helpful post, but I love how that screenshot looks like it’s straight out of 2010.

Lmao thanks. My desktop’s kinda a frankensteined mess of Windows 7 and other stuff.

If you hate flat themes you kinda end up stuck in 2010. Maybe one day I’ll learn how to make my own theme and escape it.

it just seems stuck at the check. maybe it also expects a specific os version to let you in?

what is protondb saying about it? are game/wine logs cluing us in with anything at all?

Sadly Lutris logs aren’t giving anything useful just ‘Child 29151 exited with wait status: 0’ Which is apparently a “nothing error”

And nothing on Protondb as this game never released on Steam.

I did also try setting Wine to Windows XP mode but that also didn’t help or gave me a separate memory error bug.

~~I’m pretty sure there is directX 9 to directX 10-12 translation layer thing like DXVK, which can be loaded first to bring the direct x version up to one compatible with DXVK.

Just blanking on the name unfortunately.~~

EDIT: Nevermind, DXVK says it handles DX8-12. I was thinking of something that converted below DX8 up into one of the DXVK ones, sorry.

I can’t remember the hard way to do it with wine, but if you set it up to play through proton, protontricks is an app that will help you easily install these sorts of dependencies. Just find the game your trying to fix, select default wine prefix, install windows dll, then pick what’s missing.

I think it’s mostly just winetricks, tbh, but set up to more easily find the relevant directories used by proton. Never used Lutris much, so not sure how finicky it is to use winetricks on.

      Second protontricks.

Also, when you open random exes with proton tricks, it will give you a list of existing proton instances. If you have a decent steam library already using proton, it’s going to be a list of installed games. If a game on there uses the dll that you need, you can just pick that game and you don’t need to setup anything, it already is.

I asked Google for a list of games that use directx9c, and it gave me Fallout: New Vegas, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Portal (early builds/legacy render paths), Left 4 Dead 2, and Mirror’s Edge. L4d2 is free I think, so you can just install this game then run your game through that proton instance. Zero headache.

This probably has some hidden caveat I’m not aware of, I’m just trying to play games.

Sadly already tried many different versions of d3dx and other stuff listed as directx dependancies on Protontricks.

Sorry I can’t give any specific advice but I feel your pain. Some of my favorite PC games are from the early 00s and I have found that they are particularly hard to get running on modern systems.

Lutris is the one I have had the most luck with, but it’s a very slow game-by-game process of trial and error.

I hope you figure it out!

you could try doing exactly that assuming you havent done it already, download the dx9 installer and run it in the same prefix that you are running the game in and hope for the best lol

      perhaps d3dx9 via winetricks

      Sadly already tried that.

I am using a full AMD system and don’t run into driver issues with any other games but I’ll still check.
