I don’t think this is a hot take. People valued Halo because it brought the PC multiplayer experience to the console, not because it really innovated in any way.
I had a couple of friends who gamed on PC and would come over for LAN parties before Halo came out. After Halo came out? I hosted a Halo 2 launch party where we wired together 4 XBoxes and got 16-player games going. So many more people had an XBox than a PC, and they were much easier to travel with and wire up.
I’ve been told do many times how deep and incredible the lore of Halo is, and then playing the Master Chief collection to be met by something that seemed… Average…? For a shooter story.
Gunplay felt distinctly unfun, which ultimately made me drop the Master Chief collection two-thirds the way into Halo 2.
I can recognise it as something that set the standard for what a console shooter should be. Before that was Golden Eye and it was still very experimental.
Halo Combat Evolved is out-classed by PC shooters of its time, and before, and the “good” Halo games are incredibly overrated.
