Does Epic have anything that’s even remotely close to the equivalent of Proton? Or is it going to be up to the user to then turn around and configure their games through Wine, rendering the whole idea of the “launcher” completely pointless.

Steams popularity on Linux isn’t because it has a launcher for it. It’s got a point-and-click way for a normal (non-techie) gamer to play their Windows games on Linux.
