Eve requires Apple Home and Apple Home “requires” iCloud which is nodeal

It probably requires “an app” but I need something not dependant on icloud and hopefully not too laborious to calibrate

Philips Hue are actually simply zigbee. You can reset them and use any zigbee base station, completely disconnecting them from Philips. I personally just have a USB dongle I got and run zigbeetomqtt. I know they come at a premium, but they’re still the best I’ve used. However if you choose to do a host yourself option you can also mix and match them.

I use Sonoff S31 plugs, then flash them with Espurna. They work in Home Assistant via MQTT, they have a website with login that works locally, and they have no cloud connections. WiFi connected, not new enough to have Matter or anything.

Oh Ikea just came out with Matter plugs that are good. Just get your own Matter over Thread antenna and they are cloud-less (except possibly some of the stupid Matter spec stuff, not sure how Home Assistant implements it all).

Older TPlink Kasa plugs and switches allow local only use, but you need HomeAssistant on your network to act as the server.

You redirect the plugs / switches to connect to your local network with this https://github.com/jkbenaim/hs100

Newer hardware and firmware updates close this loophole though.
