for some reason proton has always skeeved me out. i get gross corporate vibes from them that im not into at all.
General recommendation: pick a provider that allows you to make a number of aliases. Good for privacy and against spam.
Specifically: in Germany, the top paid recommendations are posteo.de and mailbox.org
I’ve enjoyed using https://addy.io/ for aliases.
Tuta and Disroot
can you elaborate on what you like about them?
Tuta offers 15 alias in the basic plan. Everything is encrypted. They do some lobbying to raise awareness about privacy. Their app is simple and efficient, though I guess it’s a bit limited if you handle a lot of mail? I use it for my personal addresses so I can’t tell.
If you have a custom domain you can make as many as you want.
I like Migadu, I don’t know any other provider that’s just based on usage where you can use as many mail addresses, aliases and domains as you like.
mailbox.org (still a corporation but less sketchy IMO, and I have years of good experience with using it), disroot (nonprofit)
Agreed.
Switched a couple years ago, pay $30/year because I wanted multiple spam accounts (disconnect some online services from my real email). And I wanted to support them.
Works a treat - I get zero spam in my main account, only spam in spam accounts is from the service their for (online games, etc).
Free tier is probably fine for many people.

mailbox doesn’t have a free tier… or were you talking about disroot?
Posteo
It’s not sexy, but Kolab Now. They’re 100% in Switzerland (no edge servers in other countries like Proton).
I use fastmail. They just raised their prices though.
