You want the winner of seeing how stupid our performative patriotism goes, The ad where they took snippets from a Martin Luther King Jr sermon to sell a car. The double irony, that very same sermon had a portion of it specifically calling out car comercials for encouraging us to want to spend too much money for the purposes of looking better than our neighbors.
many car commercials appeal to nationalism or like some sense that people who buy these are better or smarter. annoys the heck out of me.
It’s planning for the future when imports are legal. A time when US citizens are going to have the opportunity to pay more for American corporations’ product that’s been taking advantage of a captive audience for decades now or the cheaper import leaving you with 10s of thousands of dollars in your bank account. They know they aren’t competitive globally anymore so might as well sell nationalism on 4 wheels.
Maybe these companies could do less stock buy backs and lobbying, instead spending money on R&D that doesn’t include subscription garage door buttons and where is the most optimized paywall location in their vertical integration sales chain to keep you from working on your car at home.
Although… Original Dodge was the ideal American story of American entrepreneurial ingenuity saying fuck you I can do it better. Today’s Dodge is not that Dodge, it’s some sub of a conglomerate with no worries other than stock value.
its funny you mention dodge because I have up to this point bought grand caravans and they had worse reliability but a lower cost that you could sorta amoratize to cover repair. That and that they just had this great engineering feature wise. needless to say they killed off the brand to push their more expensive but no more reliable pacifica while even doing a crappier job on it to boot. When they were shopping around for a buyer awhile back I was hoping a korean company would buy them.
