I just installed Ubuntu on a second drive in my main machine. Unlike prior attempts, everything is working great. I play Blizzard’s Heroes of the Storm regularly. I don’t see it in ProtonDB. It seems to play fine. Anyone have any issues with it? I remember long ago things like Battlefield of Eternity map circles wouldn’t show.
For anyone who happens to search and find this thread. I did get it up and running. It works very well after a few tweaks. I would recommend:
- Full Screen (Windowed)
- Set Battle.net to close on game launch
- Set a frame rate maximum either in the game or through MangoHUD or some other method.
The biggest issue I had was when installing the dialog said to not login to HOTS at this time—just cancel. When the language dialog appears, you need to continue through it.
This is on Resolute Raccoon Ubuntu with Gnome and Wayland.
It’s not gonna be on protondb because it’s not a steam game my dude.
What I did to play it was to install heroic, then through heroic install battle.net, and via battlenet install HotS. Battlenet is opened via heroic, so everything running and being installed through battlenet will be installed in the same wine prefix (virtual windows space, if you will). And will work if launched via battlenet.
So basically, install Heroic, download the battlenet installer, add a new “game” in heroic, run the installer, open it. Once you have battlenet installed you can install blizzard games through there and open them through there without issues.
Thank you.
I dont have advice but damn I played the shit out of that back in the day, is it still any good? I used to main Murky, TLV, and Tyrael (when needed lol)
That and Awesomenauts were top tier mobas in my (decidedly unpopular) opinion.
It is exactly as good as it was if you aren’t really competitive. I’m sure at the top end the lack of a large, financially motivated player base must suck. But I am nowhere near the top.
Oh yeah I just played casually for the most part. And that was like ten years ago so I wont be climbing any ladders lol
Awesomenauts was so great
I know right? Criminally underrated game. Hit that sweet spot of “moba that doesnt eat an hour+ per match” and a nice sidescrolling twist on the genre. Player base just never was big enough :(
I play it every week. Not going to be on ProtonDB since it’s a Blizzard/Activision title, but the Lutris installation for it/Battle.net works fine for me. Occationally Blizzard will push an update to Battle.net that’ll break the ability to play their games, usually fixed by a reinstall, and Blizzard’s servers are held together by duct tape some times, but all that aside yea it plays just fine
I installed battlenet in steam/proton using a random guide i googled up. I think it used the default proton as well, anyway: once you have that bnet running it will install its games into that same prefix, so in my experience once bnet runs all of its games do as well.
Nowadays everything works similarly or even better than in Windows with the exception of some professional software like Autodesk Fusion or the Adobe suite.
HOTS is the greatest MOBA ever conceived, I will be murdered on this hill by a hater who plays League of Lesbians.
