I’m calling it right now, if these things ever come to market, they will be remote controlled by slaves in the third world, with a bowl of rice per day as their payment.

      That’s already a thing

      https://fortune.com/2026/02/26/humanoid-robot-that-will-do-chores-for-you-robotics-company-1x/

If you want Neo to do something complicated like clean the bathroom or vacuum, you’ll have to let a 1X employee wearing a VR headset remotely access the body (and cameras) to assist with training.

The robot has a chance to do something really funny when it’s on stage with Elon and becomes self aware.

Ah yes, I would like to pay $30,000 to have a surveillance device in my home, connected to the public internet. Microphones, cameras, probably sonar, maybe lidar and radar, plus a half dozen different communication antennas, on a platform that can move around my home while I’m not there and interact with things, controlled by some underpaid, overworked contractor in India. Surely the cybersecurity will be perfect, and no one will ever breach the teleoperation system and use the surveillance device to spy on people or actively commit crimes.

Man a cleaning robot would be kinda neat, but realistically it would have too much potential to make a huge fucking mess. Like, a roomba that drives over dog poop can only mess up in a single dimension but a full-ass robot?! Just imagine the mess it would make literally every time it takes out the trash. Or if it mistakes a flower pot full of dirt for a dish that needs to go in the dishwasher.

There’s no way these things will be affordable for most tasks. It takes a million dollars to raise an American worker, but many people will quickly suffer and starve if they don’t work for a small cleaning wage.

I wouldn’t be quite so pessimistic! Many places, especially in Europe, have been making massive breakthroughs in consumer rights to repair and data privacy laws. If we keep big companies in check and pressure the government for further progress in those sectors, it might be possible for us to just kill rich people and take their robots without the robots tattling 💕
