after 15 years, iOS has finally caught up with all the main android features, such as
- very mid ui design
- kinda floaty feeling
- unpolished vibe android itself has progressed little, although it is rapidly achieving feature parity with iOS on “locked down user hostility”. overall both ecosystems look very appealing, energetic, and healthy, for shareholders
Where are we on the linux phone OS front? Ubuntu Touch, etc?

It’s OK. Its fairly buggy, but the basics do work. I wouldn’t give it to a “normie”, without expecting a lot of complaints, but if you don’t mind tinkering, it’s not terrible.
I have been daily driving linux phones as my only phone for over two years. Typing to you now from a phone I ported myself, which has been in my pocket for 3 months now.
Linux phones are where Linux desktops were 10 years ago. A few of us who are lucky can get away with using them because we don’t require proprietary software on our personal devices, but many people will struggle without their Facebook app or their Garage Door Opening app or their Ford Connect app or whatever else. That said, SailfishOS has a decent compatibility layer, but it in itself is proprietary.
The Fairphone 6 and 6+ is something to keep an eye on, specifically with TheMightyCat’s build of postmarketOS. It’s almost fully functional with a close-to-mainline kernel, unlike Jolla phones and UBPorts, which both rely on Android kernels which will eventually stop being supported.

It seems like TheMightyCat just generates code, which cannot be upstreamed to pmOS due to the policy on generated code.
Their generated code has been criticised by some kernel developers because of lack of quality. I think some sensor were accessed without using hexagonrpcd, which means battery usage will be unnecessarily slow, which is an improper way of doing it.
Also, mainline kernel support is actively being worked on by Fairphone employees, which know the hardware best. All remaining features will be added in due time.
That’s a shame to hear. I wonder how many of the ideas will be able to be rewritten by actual human developers and how much of it will have to be scrapped.
Jolla phone is pretty good.
