I’ve been an android user since I started using smart phones in the late 2000s. Android IMO has always been more user friendly and allowing someone to create their own “desktop” so to speak. Meanwhile Apple was always the “I don’t like technology” phone. There was no customization, the “desktop” was just the Android app page and nothing else. Nothing could be unique to you outside of a wallpaper or a ringtone. Anyone with an iPhone just had an iPhone. It was the same thing. But someone with the same android phone could have different app placements, widgets here or there, and felt different even if it was the same phone.

I like shortcuts, I have some that trigger a-shell and ffmpeg/yt-dlp for conversion and/or downloading. A chore to make so I tend to use shortcuts other ppl made and modify them for my needs.

Now you can make shortcuts with the onboard AI by just describing them! Haven’t tried it out, but I made a few safari shortcuts and they seem to work pretty well for what I need.

They do actually have a pretty decent file manager. Unsurprisingly you can’t access system files, at least as far as I know. It’s not nearly as robust as what you can do on android, but it is easy to use.
I get unbelievably angry using an iPad now. They’ve completely fucked up the file system and its impossible to know where anything is. By design. I hate modern computing so much.
It’s always been like that. I had one of the first ipads as part of a trial to see if they were useful for grading papers in grad school. No. It was completely fucking useless because the only way to open files for editing was through sixteen shitty cloud services that each app wanted you to use. There was no way to just download files, edit them, and then put them back on blackboard like a normal fucking computer. The whole ordeal actually made me angry.
Basically the only apple mobile device I actually used was a gen 1 iPod touch I instantly jailbroke so I’m not super familiar. I use a Mac mini only for music but osx is getting so shitty now I’m wanting to change again or go back to 10.5 lol.
Got a powermac g4 cuz I wanted one again (and it came with a CRT monitor I wanted) and I was blown away how smooth it runs with 512 mb of ram. We have truly gone downhill a long fucking way in 20 years. I remember when I was optimistic about tech.

My sister made some photos for me with her iPad recently. I told her to sent me the photos but she just didn’t know where they were. She could access them with some photo apps but the file system was completely obfuscated. She looked to me because I am the tech guy in our family but I had no idea.
When I used iOS last, a few years ago, photos were not considered files. (Yep… let that thought digest for a bit). This made things like SyncThing/Mobius useless. IIRC photos were managed through some separate API for “security reasons”.
To access photos on a connected iDevice from a Linux machine, you need iFuse, and even then, iOS presents you all images at once. So your photos, received photos, downloads, screenshots, are all in one big pile. Have fun. Oh, but they are split into folders. By number.

If she just took photos they’re just in the photos app. But if she made something like with procreate or something then there’s just a normal file system you can access with the Files app. It’s all Unix under the hood, you can even install terminals and navigate around.

What are you talking about? You literally need to click a single “share” button. I honestly don’t understand how anyone remotely tech related could struggle with this.
You didn’t explain to me where the file is, you explained how to share one file. Some people like to do this thing with files called ORGANIZE them. Like how back in the day there used to be paper files, in paper folders, in a metal cabinet. That way you can easily find a specific file AND you can transfer the folder with all the organization intact or transfer a whole cabinet, even to a non-apple machine. I want my file system to be brand agnostic. I don’t want to have to learn a new UI every 5 years to figure out how to organize things. I don’t want to boot up my circa 2005 macbook pro (assuming it still works) and not have any idea how to find all my old media. Directories were invented in 1983 and work just fine, always have, always will.
They are already organized in the photos app. If you don’t like the photos app and how it organizes then you’re free to use a different one. Each app gets its own file system sandbox so if you wanted a simple folder structure that you manually manage, there is no technical reason that isn’t possible on iOS. I’ve personally never looked at other photos apps so I can’t recommend one.
It was a Document scanning app. We didn’t bother, she found them at home and sent me a USB stick. It’s true though that I saw this behavior on some Android founds too, where there was only the system file explorer available.

Last time I tried using an iPad I had all sorts of trouble getting access to files on my media server. That was like 10 years ago but still not going back based off that experience. Fuck apple.
Seems like you were one year early. Files app was released in 2017. 9 years ago.
Before that you pretty much had to use iTunes to transfer stuff. Now you can just plug in USB and see all the data from files app.
Yeah I recall that, I think I was able to purchase some app to do it wirelessly but the whole process was irritating AF. When I got ahold of an android tablet I was able to set up everything I wanted to do in like 15 minutes.

Companies are the new de facto legislators manufacturing narratives to push their ideas along. When that doesn’t work, they simply use their overwhelming market share to push us there anyway, replacing our law with policy.
Nations that aren’t instituting forced ID for internet use are still going to be pulled along for the ride unless they have their own digital systems to effectively replace US tech hegemony, and look how long it took to make two thoroughly “mid” mobile operating systems.
If you’re worried about this sort of over reach, then consider trying a Linux distro on your phone, or a spare if you can afford it.

I got a pixel because I heard I can install Graphene OS on it and when I got it I couldn’t enable OEM unlocking. We’re being cornered.
I’ve run into that a couple times and it’s super frustrating because there’s 2 different types of “unlocked”, and they’re pretty much all carrier unlocked these days, where an AT&T SIM card will work in a Verizon branded device, but the Verizon ones for sure never allow OEM unlocking. If buying new from Google, I’ve always bought the “Unlocked” option. If buying used, I’ve given the seller instructions on how to check that the option is available. At least on Swappa, it’s been a pretty painless process.

You need to buy an “unlocked” model. They sell carrier-locked devices at a discount so that they can install spyware on them, and then lock them down so you can’t remove it or take it to another carrier.
Don’t buy from Verizon or any carrier that locks bootloaders on phones, usually used global Pixels are the best choice

The Fairphone 6 and 6+ is something to keep an eye on, specifically with TheMightyCat’s build of postmarketOS. It’s almost fully functional with a close-to-mainline kernel, unlike Jolla phones and UBPorts, which both rely on Android kernels which will eventually stop being supported.

It seems like TheMightyCat just generates code, which cannot be upstreamed to pmOS due to the policy on generated code.
Their generated code has been criticised by some kernel developers because of lack of quality. I think some sensor were accessed without using hexagonrpcd, which means battery usage will be unnecessarily slow, which is an improper way of doing it.
Also, mainline kernel support is actively being worked on by Fairphone employees, which know the hardware best. All remaining features will be added in due time.
That’s a shame to hear. I wonder how many of the ideas will be able to be rewritten by actual human developers and how much of it will have to be scrapped.
