I will start by my answer:

I am scared of the future as hell:

  • Big companies seem to win, at least that is what it seems to me right now.
  • Humans are becoming less social in a trend that is accelerating.
  • There is no one, as far as I know, that is working on a set of rigid AI regulations that will ensure that it limits or control its harms and capabilities.
  • People around the world are losing their freedoms gradually with almost no way to get them back.
  • Everything around me seems to get uglier, from wars to hunger and it does not seem to be improving anytime soon.

What do you people think?

That AI will ruin my career, I will never find a partner, I will never be able to afford my own home and that I won’t be able to retire.

I am looking forward to Trump’s death because nobody else seems to have whatever evil charisma he has that apparently works on half the populace to keep the infighting of US conservatives from imploding the party. All of the terrible stuff going on has been in the works for decades by far more capable people, but they needed a figurehead to unite the party and cut out any dissidents and there isn’t anyone waiting in the wings to take his place.

Unfortunately he is wealthy enough that even his dementia will be held in check for far longer than he deserves and the media will continue to sanewash him so it will drag out for at least a decade more of his influence than would happen with almost anyone else.

The scary part is he will be around long enough for the other people who couldn’t do all of this on their own to accomplish their goals to tear down the whole government. At a minimum they get the rest of this term with Vance as the wet noodle filling the void but accomplishing nothing on his own, but more realistically they go completely face off on direct election manipulation and the population is too overworked, stressed out, and fighting amongst themselves to fight it.

      This is my 2026 prediction:

      • Trump has an embolism possibly caused by a not so great and beautiful diet. They stall as much as possible swearing in the VP alleging Trump may recover.

And then, right before it seems the VP will become the next president, a set of big tech companies claims that they have created [sic] a seamless AI copy of Donald J. Trump and is, for all means [sic again] the same conscience.

Most politicians call it bullshit and actively fight it, but then the Supreme Court approves it and suddenly the country is led by an LLM model mad libbing Trump tweets.

This goes for 45 days until a bipartisan vote… who am I kidding? No, it goes on and on, and now corporations are burning through the equivalent power consumption of Australia to get “the best” DJT GPT model so they can get their turn at the wheel.

Yadda yadda nuclear war yadda yadda the end.

my fears are many but they are all tied to one constant: capitalism

    • Modern American fascism is seemingly unstoppable. The legal protections in place have been eroded and the heads of agencies have been replaced with Trump loyalists. Deportation of legal residents is currently happening and the administration is actively looking into stripping citizenship from born Americans. Trump has mentioned several times that political and moral enemies would be targets. Nobody is coming for us. Nobody is going to stop this. The average American has been pacified and made powerless; nobody believes in radical revolution.
    • Every single major AI company has stated their goal is AGI (artificial general intelligence; or what we colloquially understand as actual artificial intelligence) and humanity is absolutely unprepared for it. We have no systems in place to prevent misalignment of AGI agents and our focus of profit above all else will only guarantee a misguided path.
    • Genocide is happening worldwide and the majority of the world is living in poverty.
    • I am a gender, sexuality, and religious minority, and my far left radical beliefs make me a target

That peak oil never stopped looming just because we pretend it doesn’t exist. Finite resources are finite.

IMO your fears are justified but if you look at it in a big picture way, the world is getting better for most people every generation.

Sure we have lots of fucking stupid shit to deal with right now but its not like past generations didn’t have something similar.

I think what is happening right now is that the post WWII generation, that had it all in so many ways, are coming to grips with the fact that they are going to be dead soon. So you have these world leaders like Putin trying to reclaim the past with one foot in the grave.

Big companies always win, its just reality. But they also always become so big they fall apart on their own. Just look at the first companies, nobody in their day would have believed they would have died. The West Indian Company, Hudson’s Bay Company, even fucking KODAK!

Humans being less social is nothing new either. We just all connected for the first time really. Once that wore off we are going back to a normal, it will probably be an up and down for a while but we are living in a new age of connection, not everyone is really interested in that and many of us are slowly finding the right place and right time to interact with other people.

AI is a cruel joke. Automated and prediction are cool and shit but it will also move where the money and interests are. I don’t really care about it and I think it will be background noise in 10 years, with most people laughing about what we though it could do vs what it does.

Learn some more history, especially your own. We are nothing like the civilization of a hundred years ago. Just look at what the world was like right before WWI. Or go 50 years before that and look at what the US was like right before the Civil War.

your last point is hard to disagree with but as you get older you will probably come to understand that it is just the feeling of being young and finally understanding more of what the world actually is like.

Stay true to yourself. Look at the little things and remember that you don’t have to follow the trends to be happy. Happiness is difficult to achieve and is a fight to keep.

Remember to take time to deflate and consider what you have and what you want. Don’t let the things you cannot control overwhelm you. This last part is a constant battle for me personally.

    • I’m terrified of climate change. It’s already affecting us but it will only get worse.
    • I’m scarred of another great war. As tensions keep raising and people will need an outlet to let lose.
    • I’m looking forward to enjoy all the amenities this hyper capitalistic world has to offer, (while they last.)

The last bird will die in 2042.

All drinking water will come from recycled AI and Data Center run-off conduits.

Just 0.2% of global demographics will be wild animals. The rest will be humans and livestock

All land is “owned” by a corporation, there is no Kore private land owned by individuals.

Most humans live within corporate controlled city-states that only offer rights to employees. If you are unemployed you have no rights.

Cigarettes are cheaper than they were 20 years ago.

There’s a certain group of old men, many of whom happen to be running certain countries, whose EOL - natural or otherwise - I’ll be relieved to see, but the fear is that there are plenty of (relatively) young men with similar ideals waiting in the wings, ready to take the reins when the old guard is gone.

Note that I’m not wishing them dead per se, but no-one lives forever. Not even them.

I’m scared to think that more and more, everything is becoming a business. Everything is marketable, everything has a financial purpose—even ourselves. There will come a point where companies control everything. I’m not someone who supports the idea of the government controlling every aspect of our lives, but the thought of profit-driven corporations becoming the ones who regulate everything in our daily lives—that scares me.

I am not really scared. But that’s because i am old and will most likely not live long enough to experience all the negative things that will hit us. Yet, my heart goes out to you youngsters, and i do hope you can fix at least some of the issues that are about to kill this world.

The US will push just far enough to force it’s people into concentration camps, but will not push so far as to compel foreign intervention. Americans will languish under fascism unfurled, while the rest of the world moves on. No one will be coming to save them.
