It’s extra shitty if they paid it out up front and now the employees have to pay it back, but none of this comes as a surprise.
It’s only the case because Trump is using taxpayer money and not from his pocket. If he had to personally pay the signing bonus they wouldn’t get one even if it was promised. If Elon wanted DOGE to actually do it’s job they would impeach Trump.

Iirc, it was a taxable 10K per year for 5 years. If they were let go, they had to pay back the full, untaxed amount.
