Book four of the Dungeon Crawler Carl series. Carl, Donut, and Katia get to the next level, get into more trouble, get additional skills and levels, and figure more things out. This level has the crawlers divided up into separate domes with different circular quadrants. Also, there’s getting to be a little more about the underlying factions and politics of the universe as the serious progresses. As before, if you liked the prior books, you’ll probably like this one.

I just powered through the whole series a month ago. Entertaining, didn’t really feel like I was reading literature, but it’s fun. I was kind of pissed to find out at the end that the series isn’t finished. That’s on me, I try not to start a series before it’s done.

didn’t really feel like I was reading literature

I was trying to explain to a friend about that and ended up saying that it was like fast food compared to something home cooked. I couldn’t live on it, but it’s pretty enjoyable sometimes.

DCC isn’t exactly deep, but it’s fun and it has a lot of heart and the books are quick to read.

As with a lot of things, expectations going on can have a big impact. I honestly didn’t expect much. Most of my reading list is populated with nominees and winners of the major SF&F awards, plus articles/reviews from sources I respect. I post my notes about everything I’ve read (these “mini reviews”) here annually, and sometimes those posts get a lot of comments. DCC came up a number of times as recommendations by folks here, but of course I don’t know any of them or have any history of what they consider “good.” But it came up enough times that, though somewhat dubious, I decided to give it a try.

I liked the first one enough that I’ve continued to read the series. Like I said, it’s not the deepest of most innovative thing I’ve ever read, but it’s fun and I always look forward to the next one, though usually I want something else in between.
