As far as I can tell, it is just habit, laziness and convenience. My wife literally prefers to scroll Hulu for 30 mins and settle on some 10 yr old trashy reality TV show. All in order to avoid browsing Jellyfin. Some people want to be passively fed junk TV, instead of actively seeking out quality shows they intentionally want to watch. She chooses to pay for this kind of interaction. Boggles my mind too.
My partner fought me tooth and nail not to cancel all streaming services. What got them to change their mind was the “request board” I put a short cut to a text file on every pc that points to a file on my pc. Whenever I see it updated I go out and find whatever ridiculous request they put on there. It’s always the worst trash tv one could possibly think of but thats ok I don’t have to watch it.
Now they has an endless supply of brain rot and I got to banish the blood sucking leeches that are streaming services.
I’ve been trying to switch over to the arr stack, and for anything new it’s great, but my girlfriend likes to watch some older obscure stuff (previous Halloween Baking Championship for example) which I’m having a hard time finding. Lots of stalled torrents, etc. Maybe I just need to get into some private trackers, but there is still some things that stream wins out for currently for us.
Torrents are, by design, popularity based bandwidth… Might I suggest newsgroups that can have retention of 25+ years? Oh and the speeds are enough to make your (insert connection type) beg for mercy.
I’ve heard of them but I admittedly shyed away from them since I’m not familiar with how they work. Are they free like torrents or do you need to pay to access them?
Is there one you’d recommend, or how would I go about picking one? Do they all have everything, or does it depend on what shows/movies I’m interested in?
Sorry for all the questions, I’ve been curious about this stuff for a bit but I’m the only pirate in my friend group
Oh completely going to depend. Not sure I could give advice. I set all my stuff up when Reddit was still decent and I haven’t switched it in that time. I use Giganews if that helps any, but trackers are going to completely depend on what you’re looking for (anime, oldies, etc).
I’m so confused as to why people are still paying for streaming services.

I don’t have the gear or the knowledge to get new content in full quality (4k with Atmos).
I buy UHD discs whenever possible, but still.

No time like the present to learn
Localization :(
Bah, damn near every pirate streaming site or torrent I’ve found has audio tracks in multiple languages.
Sometimes but danish dubbed kids shows can be hard to find… or so I’ve heard…

Try this, it might not help you find what you need but it could help you discover lots of things you weren’t otherwise aware of.

Switch to Usenet. Torrents are honestly terrible.
I’ve heard of them but I admittedly shyed away from them since I’m not familiar with how they work. Are they free like torrents or do you need to pay to access them?
Usually you have to pay for them. Free ones are available but they don’t have much available.
Remember, Netflix got popular because it was an access issue, not a payment issue. People were fine with paying, just not overpaying.
