I turned read receipts off years ago. Texting is not supposed to be an always connected, immediate response, experience. That is what phone calls are for. Also, don’t ever call me. My phone is a time waster/SSH client.
I just turn off read receipts if it’s really a problem, or let them see that I’ve read it. Who cares?
The whole point of this shit is asynchronous communication. They can interpret my actions however they like, and get over it or not as they like.
I had a boss who turned off read receipts and one time didn’t get my text to which she said “why didn’t you resend it?” and my reply was “because I didn’t know you didn’t get it.”
On Android, on some apps, you can rotate the phone to landscape and read more of the message.
I can just pull down the lock screen menu and read all of the messages in full…
I’ve used the trick of Inspect Element to read the full message before. Ultra sneaky.
On my phone I can usually just press-and-hold the notification or conversation and see the full message in the preview while holding. Then I can just release when I’m done and the conversation stays unread because I never actually opened it.
I use the trick of disabling read checkmarks, or “online” indicators, or “typing” indicators. I’ll answer when I find the time and motivation for it. I’m to old to play mindgames
I know that some jobs require people to have read receipts, but I cannot fathom any reason why anyone would choose this of their own volition. If for no other reason than I imagine text spammers use it to figure out if a number is “active.”
