On the one hand, you have low effort jackasses that take “the machine” and just use it to churn out trash.
On the other hand, you have zealots insisting that anything that is made by a person is made of 100% divine treasure that they did not give a shit about 2 years ago.
On the other hand, you have boardrooms full of assholes that preyed on artists to exploit their humble backgrounds and use them as faces to push trends for money, with 0 interest in any expression what so ever. They ruined the entire concept of art long before AI came along.
In the middle, you have a machine that answers the previously philosophical question : what would come out if you combined every artwork a human being made and let people use it to create their dreams?
On the other hand you have assholes using said artwork machine as an excuse to fire everyone, ruin the environment even faster, and overthrow political systems.
Like fuck all of this.
EDIT : Oh, and how could I forget the pre-AI prompt artists, “installation artists” whose job it is to know museum curators and rich people and write instructions about how to assemble boxes or tape bananas to walls. Good job assholes.
Brandon Sanderson says you are the art. The art is the change that happens in a human in the creative process. AI just can’t experience that. It simply arrives, where we must travel.

When I make a piece of music, and the way I express the distortion of time I feel through the turning of the time knob on my guitar pedal, when is the art being produced and by what? I’m pretty sure there’s some expression that is happening by me because I feel something, and I don’t think my guitar pedal is doing any feeling; however, I cannot express myself the same way without the guitar pedal.
The human being is the person piloting the AI. No one is expecting the AI (or any other tool used in self expression, like a paintbrush) to feel anything.
When you run the AI software, it doesn’t DO anything until you make it do something.
Are the anti AI people thinking that the works are generated by pressing a big green “GO” button, or that the AI is some kind of deformed , soulless human being?
I think the idea is that the art is the discovery that the pedal and the guitar let you express yourself, and what you express there.
then that happened way before I bought the pedal itself. But if I didn’t buy the pedal I couldn’t express it the same way.
The anti-ai stuff has no philosophical sense behind it; it’s just vibes. But then again, people are just churning out slop. No one fucking wins or makes sense.

Different art before the pedal. Unless you never learned, and just always knew how to do the thing?

knowing different concepts, and thinking about how they would be when they joined before having the material possession.
That’s art baby, and AI doesn’t do any of that. It just arrives at the thing.
The argument is there’s value in the journey, and it sounds like there has been a fun one for you on that there guitar.
OK, but when someone has looked at enough art to form an idea of the techniques they want to employ but for some reason, lacks the practical capability or chooses to create it through prose through the machine, how is it any different?
Or, collages are art (I assume). The artists gather existing images, choose/curate the correct ones, assemble them, and end up with their artwork. Why is it any different when someone chooses a catalog of LoRAs to create the images they want to? Do they have to dig through a bunch of shitty magazines?
It sometimes feels like psyop.
That aspect of ai isn’t even the main threat that comes from ai.
The real threat is ai used for datamining, surveillance, profiling, and algorithms which psychologically match your profile. Then they can actually control your life path through ads and algorithms. It’s already happening but this is like nail in the coffin of it becoming completely intertwined with the base foundation of our lives.
Also government/police/war usage.
It’s like people talking about consumer grade ai and usage are psyop to drown out the real issues.
The real threat is ai …
Your list combined with OP’s grievances is still non-exhaustive. Add environmental and societal impact. Nature and people suffer physically from it. People can’t get jobs. People who have created IP get pushed out by government-supported IP theft.
I’m not willing to entertain this at all. It’s not a psy-op for me, just a gigantic grift & hype of mostly one nation and its corpos.
Sure, the likes of Thiel and Altman would like you to think it’s a more complex thing, even to the point of admitting that it’s controversial. But it’s still just a grift, hype and bubble.
Reminds me Voltare, “Those Who Can Make You Believe Absurdities Can Make You Commit Atrocities”.
I think they want to be able to create any narrative the want that furthers their goals and feed it to you to accept without question as they already burnt the books to hide the truths contained inside.
I really think we are there already. This is just going to make it almost automated instead of through the old analog methods.
OP coming out of Chernobyl with his 4 hands.
I’m a fiddler on a roof.
EDIT : You need a shitload more hands to play some of the riffs Behold the arctopus come up with
I think you just summed up everything wrong in one post. Not sure how to fix it at this point. The idealist would say to just not use AI and get rid of everything connected to it. That may even be right. But that isn’t going to happen at a scale that matters, and that wouldn’t undo the damage. Maybe there isn’t anything other than just pushing back wherever we can and wait for things to break (they will, it’s inevitable).
