OTOH, one of the few coping techniques I’ve found to be helpful is when I absolutely MUST not lose something, especially to take with me somewhere on the next day, to loudly proclaim “I’m going to lose this thing, so I’m putting it here so I know where the fuck I lost it” - and making a big deal about it usually helps solve that problem.
…if I do remember that I need it the next day, of course. But more often than not I wake up and remember “I need the thing”. :)
That’s when I put the thing with my keys, so I’m forced to see it when I go to leave. Doesn’t work when the thing I need to remember is refrigerated, though. (I forget to bring lunch so often, my work locker is full of back-up snacks.)
I’ll put my keys on top of my lunch in the fridge, because then I can’t leave without remembering my lunch.
The problem comes when I am going out of my mind looking for my keys, screaming that I’m going to be late, until I finally remember that I made lunch, and the keys are with it.
Your technique is my technique. For things that can’t wait by the door, I use whatever object will jog my memory. Fork for lunch, helmet for bike, charging cable for devices, etc.
I tend to do similar, but by putting said thing clearly in my path of getting to the things that I can’t actually leave my home without. (eg. keys, shoes, etc.) Even if I don’t have to take the thing outside, all I have to do is (if I still somehow forget where it is) take a moment to regroup by going on a walk —which the pup is all too happy to lobby for any given moment. 🤘🏼

Late is momentary, whereas hangry can be all day. 😅
