I ran a couple of cables for the highest priority stuff, but I’m using MoCA for the rest and it’s been great. Even for game streaming I’ve not noticed a difference, though I don’t play any fast-paced FPS games these days.
I ran a few hundred feet through the basement and walls. I offered to hard wire everyone else in the house but strangely none of them accepted. So is just my bedroom and my office and some laid down prep work to go anywhere else in the house if needed
You did conceal it right
What do you recommend? Just the clips or something else to conceal it
Ideally youd run it through a crawlspace, basement, or attic. Drill a hole at either end through the floor, pull the cable, and seal the hole with silicone caulk.
cries in apartment
Im not saying its a good idea but uuuh
What they can’t see won’t hurt them. You can patch holes before that move out visit.

Lmao
Yeahhh this one fuckin got me. Rented a room from a friends mom for a year, buddy and I had our battle stations on the dining room table and the cables were just on the ground lol
Ethernet all run through the walls. Jacks in every room. Everything that can be hardwired.
I’d a coworker who asked the builders to put ethernet jacks in.
They put rj11 phone jacks in instead.
A lot of builders run ethernet and terminate it with the rj11 port plates. The cable behind it is still ethernet. They just don’t use like half of the wires.
Biggest problem is they often split it in the walls so it doesn’t work as ethernet.
Um…
You had me until the end. If Cat5e has been ran, then you just need to reterminate both ends with proper keystones.
The annoying thing I find with electrians is that they will use style A, so fucking annoying. Use B. Sun Sky Grass Dirt, then swap the green and white with blue and white. Boom.
Look at keystone: the rule above is for a male end.
My last house had all my phone lines connected together in one place. I thought, perfect, I’ll put a gigabit switch here! I removed the ethernet wires, put ethernet heads on them, then went throughout my whole house doing the same at every phone jack. I got an ethernet cable tester. Not a single one worked. I could get the occational partial connections, but no full connection. I made a few ethernet cables just to make sure I wan’t doing it wrong, and they worked fine.
There may be another explaination as to what I saw, but I tried for several days trying to get ethernet throughout the house to no avail.
Your phone lines were cat3.
You can technically get 10mbps, or in short runs, 100 mbps. Most NICs don’t even negotiate 10baseT.
And hence, why it wasn’t working.
Some electricians will lazily splice in the wall an steal 2 pairs for another phone jack, like the guy above was saying. It’s very annoying, not exactly common, but does happen.
Though typically if that’s the case you’ll have multiple rj11 heads on the same wire at the head end.
My previous apartment had rj11 jacks in the wall, but it was cat5e cable in the walls. Popped off the face plates, reterminated the cords as Ethernet, voilà!
Imma bout to rip holes in my wall to get a cable upstairs. WiFi is simply awful.
I’ve been planning the same, but I don’t have detailed enough diagrams to safely do it
I’ve got ethernet running through the house, without running it through the walls. I’ve used cord covers but it’s still a bit tacky looking, TBH.
It’s totally feisable to do runs through the walls via the attic (my house is a single story on a concrete slab) but I don’t want to do that particular job. Might pay someone to do it some day, but it’s pretty low on list of things to throw money at.
I took a retired enterprise switch from my office, and can finally make use of the dual ports on my homelab, downloader, and PC. Holy shit is it nice. It’s like 20x faster than my wifi was. I transferred 2 TB of movies to my server in like 35 minutes.
That says more about your storage than network
laughs in 48-port PoE switch
Concealed or not, welcome to the hardwire gang.
My Aruba is great for the 3 things ive got connected to it because why not
One nice thing about my rented house is that a previous owner (possibly my landlord) ran an ethernet from the lounge at the front right to the small bedroom at the back, upstairs. So, router > Deco node > ethernet > Deco node > 1gbps switch. Then I have three PCs upstairs wired to that switch, and they all get the full glory of our 1gbps fibre.
But, like, the rent is almost £1400 a month, so…
I have an ethernet cable going from the dining room, up the wall, through 1 door, on the ceiling, through a second door, then back down into my pc.
Meh, after testing high-end router, I realized there is pretty much no difference in speeds and latency, went completely wireless. I can imagine this might not be the same in cities, apartments, large houses, etc but I live in a rural region with no other networks nearby.
Interesting choice given the effectiveness of Ethernet degrades at 100ft
He is testing limits of ethernet and his family
Cat 5 can go 100 Meters, so about 330 feet. Cat 6 is up to 220m, and cat 7 up to 350m.
You might be confusing feet and meters
Plus how fast modern wifi can go. I can’t see any advantage.
I can’t see any advantage.
Doesn’t quit working every time somebody microwaves a burrito.
OK. I’m going to ELI5 this bit. Not being mean, sarcastic, or trying to talk down. I don’t know you’re knowledge level, so I apologize.
Imagine 2 different 1" pipes. One gets its dedicated supply running to your house, and the other gets divided among all the houses in a cul-de-sac.
Your house will have the best water pressure, unaffected by any neighbors, so your showers, laundry, etc, all runs perfectly fine.
Your neighbors, however, may or may not have adequate pressure, and depending on your many “devices” are relying on water, some get barely any flow at all. Devices that are furthest away get nothing.
So, theoretically, you get a pipe of water as do your neighbors, but the best time for your neighbors to use it is when there’s fewest utilizing. But you can’t really gauge when that is, so it’s often unreliable.
The more technical side is, wireless has the potential to go beyond 1Gbps which is great! However, many current WiFi 6, 6E, and 7 routers/APs still only utilize a 1Gb Ethernet port, so you’ll have a bottleneck regardless. Signal strength depends on obstructions, which could be walls, furniture, pipes, electrical, insulation, etc. 2 devices close by don’t get the same signal, SO many variables come into play that are resolved by dedicated connections like Ethernet. The more devices that share your 2.4GHz, 5GHz, & 6GHz the more shared the signal gets. A 2.4GHz has longer range but slower speeds and its often saturated by IOT devices. 5GHz & 6GHz devices benefit from better throughput, but suffer signal degradation easier.
I hope that helps. Happy to answer any other questions.
