    • iris keyboard integrates Copilot, doesn’t sound like you want that
    • gmaps wv is out of development for 4 years now and doesn’t work very well anymore.

That is gmaps wv. The last commits 2 years ago were for weblate translation and license updates. The commits before that were to update cradle keyrings 4 years ago.

Gmaps wv is a dead project, look at the issues people submitted to get an idea what was broken when:

        • streetview link stopped working in early 2024
        • no access to fine grained GPS location since 2023
        • problems with access to location providers altogether

Google is actively breaking anonymous access to gmaps, so those things are also breaking

The actual webview that is dead https://github.com/Divested-Mobile/maps

This fork is active and fixes stuff if something is broken, so at the very least it will be alive a little longer. Last release was 5.0, 2 months ago, with fixes for street view.

Gmaps wv is a dead project

Meh, not really. It is absolutely not dead for my usecase, for example. You still have streetview to some extend, still more full information about some places compared to OpenStreetMaps, photos, reviews of places, sometimes more correct pathways. So not exactly dead project.

It will become dead once google will entirely block anonymous access ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Google is actively breaking anonymous access to gmaps, so those things are also breaking

Yes, I am aware of that, but until google completely make not possible to use their maps anonymously — something akin to gmaps webview will have its use.

Hey, you’re the one on the journey of de-googling, it’s your decision.

However, one of the reasons many ppl degoogle is because we are lied to all the time by software companies.

Iris keyboard also says “network permission is optional until triggered by translation”, and the iris keyboard immediately asks for network permission on install, so trust that as much as you like.

Yeah, and the documentation says it won’t ask until translation is invoked. On android 14 and up, that permission will be asked AT INSTALL.

Look, do what you like. If you don’t care what people tell you, I’m not sure why you’re asking.
