tl;dr: spaces around em-dash tell nothing about text being LLM-generated
Non-tl;dr ahead:
Shouldn’t em dash be not surrounded by spaces—like this—as per grammatical | punctuational | formatting | typography rules? I’ve always tried to use em-dash as seen fit (at first relying on some websites to turn two consecutive hyphens – like here – into one. Though at first I didn’t even notice, and now actively despise how it looks like without spaces, so mostly use it like in the post — here is an example. LLMs are supposedly good at these writing things, as I’ve heard.
Did a little web search and yeeeeeeeeeah. Apparently there exist “styles” which suggest both variants, with the more general rule just being consistent. At least for English. In my language spaces are required (except between dates), so apparently it’s not so much about personal preference.
So yeeeeah, it actually tells nothing about this rambling being AI-generated, LLMs (looked through my usage too) use both variants. Sorry if I wasted your (reader) time, hope you learned a little along the way.
