I stopped tipping except at sit down restaurants and bars. They’re the only ones being paid a lower salary because tips are expected. Oh and delivery drivers, too.
Yeah, I’m very limited about where I tip and I feel zero shame about that. I’m not here to pay other people’s salaries. I gotta save up for when I’m elderly and our nation is even more fucked up than it already is.
This might be a hot take but I don’t even tip at sit down restaurants because it’s not even that hard of a job. If farmers don’t get tipped then why should servers?
Edit: I’m in California, minimum wage for food service is higher than what I get paid for my IT job
Are you in the US? If so, many states allow servers and bartenders to be paid less than min wage… $2.13/hr in some states currently, which is the same rate I was paid 37 yrs ago when I was a waiter. While most states now require the wages + tips have to meet or exceed min wage with the employer making up the difference, $7.25 isn’t enough for anyone to get by these days and if employers have to make up the difference, they’ll fire the employee because they assume they suck if they’re aren’t getting tips
The reason I tip at sit down places or delivery isn’t because the work the server is doing is so difficult. Its because they’re allowed to legally be paid next to nothing due to the expectation of tips. I have close friends who work in that industry who wouldn’t get by if not for tips. We should abolish the idea of tipping as an excuse to lower wages, its ridiculous.
The real question is why restaurants in America are allowed to even do that… Pay them like everybody else and do away with tips. No other business is allowed to subsidize wages like that.
Oh no, just general classism. While the US has its share of misogyny, of course, rape culture being the forefront, it’s actually not that bad compared to the average first-world country in that regard, and almost all misogynistic views in the united states are exclusively in service to capital owners control over society. This includes abortion, the wage gap, and the entirety of the beauty industry.
Pink capitalism is a huge part of American society, and is the only reason women have any rights, given it is slightly more profitable on average to let women earn their own money to spend on capitalism, instead of solely acting as support and production of human capital.
In Canada, the minimum wage for servers, bus boys, bar people, is all below the regular minimum wage because it takes into account the fact they make tips and it’s expected. That’s why I tip those people. Because it’s literally part of their salary.
They are guaranteed minimum wage if they don’t make that with tips. They aren’t salaried as per regular employees, you’re choosing to subsidize. It is a social norm, but lets call it what it is.
The minimum wage for someone making tips is 13.30$/h
Those include:
Restaurateurs - except fast food where you order and pay at a counter where you receive the food.
Food deliveries, like when you order at a restaurant and ask for it to be delivered
Where alcoholic drinks are served, like bars or at events
Hotel staff like cleaning and maintenance.
These people need tips for their wage to be equal or above the regular minimum wage. You’re supposed to tip them. Otherwise you’re an obstacle to them earning their living wage. Unless the service you received was bad.
Now I understand that if tipping was not mandatory, like everywhere else in the world, it would definitely be better. I agree that tipping should be abolished. But that’s not the case right now. So in support for your fellow worker, you should tip at least the ones mentioned above if you are in Canada, or Québec at least.

Same but also includes coffee shops that aren’t Starbucks.
Even though my city has a “no tip wage” minimum wage now, it’s still out of principle.
This has always been my policy.
I don’t tip for carry out. Tips are for good service. Meaning I tip after service is rendered.
I’ll throw a couple of bucks at the people making my food, but I’ve worked that thankless job.
I mostly tip well at places I’m planning coming back to lol. Or go to regularly. Gotta get those benefits of being a “regular”

Oh I’m in California so it’s a little different. In some states yeah, it’s fundamentally how service workers even afford to live

If you ever wonder why something is stupid in the united states, 99% of the time the answer is anti-black racism.
In this case, it is part of the 99%
Is the other 1% misogyny?
