The woman began working at the zoo when she was 17 and spent nearly all of her 40-year career there.

An investigation is underway … Zoo staff are typically not permitted to be in the same space as predatory animals.

Curious to see what the investigation finds. She was an experienced zookeeper, so it’s hard to believe she was in there for the thrill.

I’ve been looking at a bunch of articles, as they all have little bits of detail that aren’t in other ones, and I’m wondering if she was just not aware they were in here.

The animals seem to have been moved into a place they aren’t normally, due to weather, and she was alone instead of with someone. She’s got a ton of experience, including near a decade with these cats. It’s not like I’d expect her to just forget how dangerous they can be, so that’d really suck if she just walked into the wrong room without knowing.

I hope they are able to piece together what happened to keep everyone else and the animals safe.

Staff are generally expected to follow strict procedures when working around dangerous predators. Dutch media reports have indicated that zookeepers typically work in pairs but enter animal enclosures separately to reduce the risk of dangerous encounters.

Investigators will examine why the woman was inside the enclosure and whether the required safety measures were in place. However, no evidence of a safety breach has been established.

The leopards had reportedly been moved indoors because of adverse weather conditions in the Netherlands. It remains unclear whether this contributed to the incident or whether the zookeeper knew the animals were inside.

Without surveillance footage, investigators face additional challenges in determining exactly what happened. No definitive explanation for the fatal attack has been announced. (IBTimes)

Thanks for digging further! A miscommunication resulting in her entering the enclosure at the wrong time sounds totally plausible.

It’s very relevant to my interests, so I’ve been reading what I can find on it. I don’t personally work with animals this dangerous, but I know what we do to contain the animals we do have, and I love touring facilities and talking to people that work with these larger animals to see how it works, and it seems like a very strange thing to have occurred.

I couldn’t imagine this happening to one of the senior staff of the center I’m at. We’re always looking for ways to keep things safe for ourselves and the animals, because nobody wants to see something like this happen. 🥺 She spent almost her whole adult life caring for these animals, and I’m sure some of her last words were her asking that nothing bad happen to them because of this. It makes me sad to see some of the sarcastic comments made about the situation in some of these posts.

It’s definitely sad, but I think it’s important to remember any job has some degree of danger. At least with animals, you’re always expecting a bit of the unexpected, and zoos are seemingly much more regulated than a lot of places I’ve worked! 😅

I dont even know why I read the comments on news articles anymore

I don’t want to sound like I’m against life but if the animal kills a human, if it had the same rights as we do…it would be put to death for murder. Justice should be served. The fact that the zoo keeper was caring for the animal and committing her life to helping them as a whole is a big aggravating factor.

Basically this also says: “Because a leopard ate a zookeeper’s face, the death penalty should be reinstated in the Netherlands.”

Doubly stupid because no one is put to death for murder in the Netherlands, where it is not applied, banned by the constitution, and banned by EU law. The law also bans extradition of suspects if they risk the death penalty.

That leopard has the the right of armed resistance to occupation

Also it cannot read and will eat your face regardless of made up human laws.

At least that one got downvoted, and the person advocating for letting these animals live got upvoted. Reality has a left-wing bias.

I saw the head line and thought “wouldn’t it be funny to post this to c/leopardsatemyface?”, then I looked again and noticed it was.

    I’m a doofus.

The Beekse Bergen Safari Park said in a statement that the woman, whose name has been withheld in accordance with Dutch privacy law, had passed away after she suffered serious wounds to her head and neck on Saturday while working in an enclosure with two male Persian leopards. “Her passing deeply affects us all, and we sympathize intensely with her family, friends, and loved ones,” the zoo in the southern town of Hilvarenbeek said in a statement, which was made together with her family. The woman began working at the zoo when she was 17 and spent nearly all of her 40-year career there.

No, just some details about her death and how she’ll be missed.

Sounds like she was pro-leopard but not necessarily in favor of leopards holding political office.

I’ll note the zoo isn’t going to kill the leopards because they were just being leopards. “They are predators.” If she survived long enough to give an opinion she probably agreed.

Zoos very often do conservation work, including keeping animals that can’t be released back into the wild.

They also help the public learn about these animals. Thos can help with funding for conservation efforts.
