edit: makes sense, hours old account with dozens of comments that are controversial on purpose. what do you even gain from this on lemmy? anyway, comment still stands because people do legitimately have this opinion

original comment: doesn’t have anything to do with either of those things. please don’t go spouting about things that you have no knowledge of.

this was a business jet that presumably got caught by the elements before losing control. they were in icing conditions and asked to climb higher to get out of it. and ATC cleared them to climb. not even 5 seconds later the plane calls an emergency as they enter an uncontrollable dive. there’s nothing ATC could’ve done, and the weather is impartial, not political

Weather is impartial, not the organizations tasked with monitoring it. Can you definitively say that NOAA cuts didn’t affect this? ATC is one of dozens of orgs that a) have been cut substantially and b) do have some role in preventing things like this.

i don’t think NOAA cuts affected the pilots’ decision making using a radar in their cockpit, plus 2 controllers advising them of shit weather along their route

I think they are making a very solid point. Deregulation of a heavily regulated industry that has worked like clockwork is being gutted in America. Privatizing things like air travel creates situations like this. I think it’s a little mean spirited and unfair to call this person a troll, if they are trolling they are still making a good point in this comment.

Think of it, of the thousands and thousands of flights every day, are there avg more private flights that crash/malfunction or commercial? I’d bet money on the answer before even looking it up.

i don’t think it stands in this case, per my last comment. as a general sentiment, maybe, but not here.

even if it did, the comment is still in bad taste

How is it in bad taste to speak about ways to save lives and prevent events like this? It’s literally people’s jobs to figure this stuff out when these kinds of tragedies happen. And it’s a good thing to prevent these kinds of things. And what does? Regulation.

A few pilots in the aviation subreddit speculated it was icing that caused sudden loss of control. Not everything bad has to have a political cause. Sometimes it’s just randomly bad weather for 2 minutes at exactly the wrong time.
