Lemmy’s pretty good about getting to the meat of a thing, but other platforms will breathlessly report a proposed law by a freshmen state congressmen as a done deal. Some dude’s been in his state’s congress for a few months, proposes some bullshit to get his name in the news, and it works every damned time.
“Draconian taxes” meanwhile France is in draconian debt.
France will go bankrupt if they dont cut their government spending by a huge amount. But any proposal in that direction causes riots. So instead their government is just driving at full speed towards bankruptcy.
The problem is that all the boomers are retiring and demographically and economically that’s just impossible to keep up with. Their government has the highest debt of Europe, but meanwhile the lowest retiring age of all and a huge bureaucracy. 1 in 3 French people work for the government. It is just not possible, no matter who or how much you tax people.
i didn’t say they shouldn’t increase taxes at all. the point is they keep implementing taxes that disproportionately impact lower and middle class people.
It’s a proposed law… like most laws, it will almost certainly die along the way, or be altered to irrelevance.
Think through this for a hot second about how such a law could affect EU internal trade and complicate external trade. Of course it will die.
Stop hyperventilating.

i mean france has passed similarly draconian taxes before that caused riots.

But they won’t pass a billionaire tax either.
Billionaire Tax isn’t even enough.

My point is that it’s ridiculous to propose a regressive tax on internet when the zucman tax was voted down earlier this year
Well… ask the socialists that proposed it what their reasoning was…
They aren’t socialists, they’re members of the center-left neoliberal “parti socialiste”.
The solution to the debt crisis is not regressive taxes and austerity, that’s what Macron’s been doing and it’s only gotten worse.

France never passed a law asking me to pay more than I earn
