ensure that weightlifting continues to be a platform of inclusion, respect and solidarity

I’m sorry, but there should be no respect or solidarity for someone that kills other people. And don’t sell me the bullshit that a citizen is not the same thing as their government. That’s irresponsible. When we Italians got fed up of Mussolini we revolted, fought and killed him. If your government goes too far it’s your responsibility as a citizen to stop it (via democracy or via rebellion if there is no other way)

The EWF said that it believes “sport must remain above politics” and that it “does not accept discrimination based on political or geopolitical circumstances, especially at a time when such tensions are on the rise across the world”.

It’s not simple geopolitics anymore when a country is invading another country. Especially with Russia’s significant state involvement with sport and weightlifting in particular.

I think Israel should probably be in the list too but let’s not get into whataboutism and respect the stand they took as it is. Poland does have enough problems with antisemitism as it is, no need to give the international community fuel.

Let’s do get in “whataboutism” aka consistency aka non hypocrisy. What about the USA now with Venezuela or if they invade Greenland? During their decade long occupation of Iraq?

What is your excuse for that? The US is also the next biggest offender in Olympics doping after Russia.

I suspect it’s because they feel one is a threat to their own sovereignty, while the others are only a threat to that other countries.

If that’s the case, it’s not hypocrisy.

How is a Russian athlete flying a neutral or other countries flag a threat to their sovereignty

Do I really need to clarify that I meant one country, not one athlete, in the context of being a threat to a nation’s existence?

and how does that excuse accepting genocide and imperialist invasion just because you aren’t directly affected by it?

Countries tend to prioritize themselves over other countries. That’s kinda what countries are.

But regardless of whether it excuses it or not, it makes it not hypocritical. You can be selfish, and even immoral, without hypocrisy.
