Summary
China’s Ministry of Commerce has delayed BYD’s approval to build an EV plant in Mexico, fearing U.S. competitors could access its technology.
The move reflects rising trade tensions, with Trump accusing Mexico of being a “backdoor” for Chinese goods. Mexico has also imposed tariffs on Chinese imports, complicating relations.
BYD remains committed to expansion but faces supply chain and tariff challenges.
Other Chinese EV makers, including ZEEKR and Neta, have also sought entry into North America, but China’s caution may stall these efforts.
Fair enough.
I’d buy one of these in a heartbeat.
What technology, slave labor? We already have that.
While that is true. Two things can be true at once. While their oligarch’s have been exploiting workers. They have been heavily investing and actually building up on science. While our oligarchs have simply just been exploiting workers and divesting from all science. Under this current Administration whatever claim we had to being a world scientific leader is effectively gone. And we are now on the other end of the club that many Administrations in the US government used for Generations against other countries.
In addition, there are plenty of kinds of information, technical or otherwise, that would be valuable for competitors like Tesla. Elon would be interested to know how production is going, how many employees are working each shift, what suppliers are making deliveries, how many cupholders they expect to put in each new model, etc. Corporate espionage is already a significant concern, and now the CIA works for the Nazi who owns Tesla.
“Uh-oh the US is headed for recession, how can we delay this thing?”
“I know, we’ll say they want to steal our tech”
