I think it’s a bit harsh to call someone transphobic for not understanding something. It’s not an integral part of everyone’s life, so educate them and be patient with them. If they want to learn more about the differences that’s already a great thing.

Hmmm, I wouldn’t necessarily consider it harsh. Our current societies are unfortunately transphobic, so not being exposed to trans issues is leads to transphobic attitudes and points of view. Transphobia doesn’t exclusively mean “overt hatred of trans people”, also internalized attitudes and thoughts such as oversexualization, stereotypes, etc.
