Arcane season 1 is one of the best shows, live action or animated, that I’ve seen. It is 10/10 storytelling, world building, visuals, pacing, character development, voice acting, soundtrack…it has no right to be as good as it is. If you watch it, know that the 9 episodes were intentionally released 3 episodes at a time because they’re like acts of a play.
Do you like strong women? Character choices that make sense? Commentary on social structures? Creative portrayals of trauma? Stories where the consequences are terrible because everyone really believes they’re doing the right thing, and you can see everyone’s point? Welcome to Arcane, where the H stands for Happiness.
Season 2 is…meh in my opinion. It has cool moments but they shifted from a character driven story to a plot driven one and it throws off the pacing and suspension of disbelief. Still gorgeous to look at.
But season 1 is worth it on its own. Others may disagree, but I think if they had ended it where they did with season 1 it would be a perfectly self contained story.
I’d say the problem with season 2 is that they just had too much plot. I assume they learned that they wouldn’t get a third season and tried to cram two seasons worth of plot into one. It’s still phenomenal and I recommend to watch it but it suffers from its fast pacing that leaves little room for the characters to breathe and some side plots underdeveloped.
