I don’t see why “free” food and drink, beyond water, has to be provided in basic fare. It just adds a layer of cost.
If you want food service, pay for it.
Last time I flew through Madrid, beyond security, there was a Burger King (a bit more expensive than regular), a bunch of other deli and coffe places where you could get sandwiches, baguettes, etc, water fountains to refill your bottle all over the place, and a bunch of vending machines with sandwiches and snacks.

For the love of God, don’t carry a stinky takeout double whopper onto a plane.
Maybe they should have thought about that before taking away the little bags of pretzels and cookies
That happens all the time, if you are flying out of any major airport. It really isn’t that big of a deal.
