my father was a university professor and an expert in his field, writing and publishing.
I’m not happy with my job and I’m deciding if I should keep it or study a bachelor, meaning less money for at least 3 years, working part time, relocating… for an uncertain future.
I explained my fears and the situation to my father thoroughly. This once brilliant person capable of giving me several points of view about several topics pasted my questions to an AI engine and sent me its answers, it’s like he didn’t even try to answer the questions himself. wtf?
It’s sad and scary: a person I once could confide in, ask for guidance is now… disappearing? It’s like he disregarded the emotional component completely.
He is now 78 years old. Am I being unrealistic?
And the AI answer? gets several things wrong and doesn’t tell me anything new but holy shit, the way the answer is phrased (my personal opinion, what I think is…), no wonder so many seniors believe they’re talking to an actual human, which is scary on so many levels, because the engine hallucinated several false facts and presented them so neatly packaged, seniors take them as correct fact.

I wouldn’t take the use of AI alone as a sign of mental decline. The question for you should be is if this is the first time you’ve questioned his mental acuity or have you seen issues before and this is just the worst you’ve seen so far.
First about the bachelor, I did it from a similar situation, started when I was 30, best decision ever. Now I make more money and the job I have is so much more interesting.
About your dad, yeah that is scary and sad, I’m in a similar situation, but my dad is only 71 and it’s much worse than what you describe, I had a very hard time adjusting. As children we see our parents as strong and wise and then some day the decline starts and it’s shocking.
Regarding education, i agree…o went back to school at 35 for an associates in a health care field and it was the best decision i could have made. I’m a few years from retirement and will be able to pick up a part time job in the field to stay busy and earn a little extra.
Regarding aging parents - it’s incredibly hard. Be kind. Be appreciative of what they offer. Accept each day for what it is. It doesn’t get easier. I’m regretful everyday that i sometimes let impatience beat me and i wish I’d just said, “thank you,” instead of arguing over nothing.

If he is 78 and using AI to generate responses he is not declining in any significant way, the thing you may need to accept is not his decline but his withdrawal from you.
If going by post content, this definitely would fit better in the fuckai community. The father’s almost an afterthought and just a segue into ranting on AI.
