i read somewhere that there was an area with an overpopulation of deer and they nearly turned this beautiful forest into a completely barren desert. then wolves were introduced into the area and things got better

Game of telephone with that one, worse with every telling. No deer turned anyplace into a desert. Just the reintroduction of wolves improved the overall health of an ecosystem. I believe it was Yellowstone.

Any thing in excess is bad. Too many deer is bad, too many wolves is bad.

The same reason is why the rise in vegan alternative demand has increased the amount of monocrops such as soy. Which has actually caused more animal deaths though the knock on effects of those crops then cattle ranching causes.

Insect death, natural pollinators, and loss of habitat because of it are major problems with the recent massive surge in demand for vegan alternatives on mass scales.

You have to have balance. Too much of anything is bad, and not enough is also bad. Spread out the demand and keep natural resources in check by not over taxing them and not letting them run out of control.
