I actually agree for the most part. There are endless places to buy PC games but Steam offers an experience that genuinely makes that experience better.
It’s not perfect and I don’t love everything Steam does, but it’s much better than Microsoft’s store or buying directly from each developer and getting a disorganized library. (Though, supporting indie devs directly is awesome.)

If I weren’t buying games on steam I would be a dirty pirate. That’s their competition right now.
Steam also contributes back. They have basically single-handedly revolutionized gaming on linux, VR, and arm
