Congratulations Aussies, we have a Trumpette!

Australia was never monocultural and can never be monocultural. Before and during English colonisation there was a pre-existing culture on this continent which will continue into the future and will not be erased. As for European-descended colonisers, from the beginning the colony was split between Protestants and Catholics, English and Irish, ruling class and their enforcers and convicts and so on. And that’s just for starters. There has never been a monoculture. There is a monocle view which makes it simple not to think.

What are your favourite (or reviled) Pauline truisms (or falsisms)?

I doubt that monoculture exists anywhere. What does that even mean? It’s as nebulous as the term social cohesion. A thought terminating cliché. We’re already living in different cultures based on our geographical location and class background.

Much of what she says fits this vague, nostalgic view of the past and what the cookie cutter present should be.

Yeah nostalgia can be distorting. It makes it worse when material conditions were actually better for many people in the past though. That has nothing to do with this monoculture idea though. And Pauline won’t make material conditions better for workers.

That’s for sure. It’s just words anyway. If PHON have to front up with real policies let’s see what they come up with.

      I suspect it’s a reaction to “multicultural”. Their demand isn’t a cohesive vision, it’s a tantrum.

Besides which unless we do some pretty awful stuff it’s probably impossible to achieve. It’s unbelievably diverse for our population.

The kind of monoculture I’d like to see is one that priotises wages over asset growth. I suppose that would be awful for asset owners, but I’m sure they’ll be OK.

Read it as monochrome culture and it makes much more sense.
