I’ve been eternally cursed by the “it should just work”, especially in the world of Linux. For every game that launches fine with no support listed, there’s another that lists Steam Deck compatibility and I can’t even make it to the loading screen.

I’ve tried half a dozen OSs with Proton over the years at this point and every time I turn the corner after explaining my setup, someone whips around telling me my entire setup was never going to work in the first place and I should have been using this stack instead.

I’m just tired, so usually, I’ll put about 30 minutes of effort of trying random bullshit from ProtonDB before realizing my time is worth more than troubleshooting a video game.

Really? Damn, I can’t remember the last time I tried launching a Steam game and it didn’t work. What are you trying to play?

Most recent example was Horizon 6. 4 and 5 run without a hitch and the world looked really promising. Made it over the first crest of a hill and crashed every time. Tons of missing textures in the 7 seconds of gameplay I got to see.

I refunded it and got 007 instead and I think I’m having more fun with that than I would have with Horizon anyway.
